      msbaa:
      Hello Everyone

I met a private tutor for my p5 girl who offered an intensive 1 to 1 coaching for 3 months (math & science total 48hrs). The rate quoted was $180 per hour. Upon completion of this 3 months intensive coaching she will join the group at $80 per hr. Is this the normal going rate for private tuition?

FYI my girl is an average girl but fared badly this year in CA1 & SA1.

Appreciate your comments and welcome any recommendation for tutors/enrichment classes.

      Thanks.
even learning lab is not that expensive compared to this prices

I'm going to a group tuition in Buangkok and my parents pay $380 a month for four classes. The one-to-one tuition in my tuition centre is around $360.Each lesson is 1.5h. One hour for $180...thats really too expensive. My friend failed her science in p5, went to group tuition and three months later, scored a high B/low A(I forgot) for SA2.
The group tuition is also quite ex.
          I think you've been conned.

Hmm in this tuition industry where there are imperfect information parents can get an idea of the market rate (shaped quite a bit by demand and supply) by checking out the websites of tuition agencies like temasek tutors. That’s what I did so that I know how to charge.

when you see moe teachers charging only $40/h for primary school and someone came along and quote an outlier price, something is wrong.
Sure a bit of fluctuation is expected given qualification, experience, track record and location.

                Hi all,

If you read again, msbaa has NOT been conned. I believe she is asking if that is the normal rate and asking for recommendations. She has not commited.

I heard that currently MOE teachers are charging around 40/hr for lower primary & $45-$50/hr for upper primary. Really cannot imagine a private tutor to quote twice the amount per hour! :?

Think you can get good tutors for $40 to $50 per hour based on recommendations.

My DD is in P4 and goes for group tuition and the ex-teacher charges $25 per hour. Am happy with her results, so I don’t believe that you need to pay more to get more.

Whoever the tutor may be, the child still needs to work hard on his or her own to ensure she meets his or her set targets.

I believe Uncle Observer only charges $50/h on a 1-to-1 basis. In his blog, he mentioned that he did not receive any genuine response for his service. It looks like he has quoted too cheaply, so no one interested as everyone believes that Expensive must be good while Cheap or Reaonable is likely to be bad or not so good lah............

Isn’t $50/h not cheap? Unless you are talking about secondary and above.
