I see. I’m not entirely sure but I assumed my kid’s school would ease off the full length SA1 (use time to teach upper primary curriculum further, de-emphasize exams, etc).


I have started collecting the prior year SA1s. They are definitely a good practice run. Still, sometimes I think the kids focus more on the actual thing vs. at home. There is also the question of can you do it when it really matters (anxiety always a bit different for the real thing).

I see many parents mentioned here in the forum about the drop in results in P5.


But nobody seemed to mention the “sudden” faster pace & spike in homework load right from Term 1 in P5. Some of my friends (and their kids) have been caught unawares and are struggling to adapt. These are across several primary schools and their kids are in HA classes as well as MA classes.

Certain schools also make after-school supplementary lessons compulsory (for as many as 3 subjects). So the kids are not only more tired daily, they find it tough to finish the increased hw & still have adequate sleep.

I happened to start DS on P5 tuition during the Nov holidays, with tutor giving regular & challenging homework. Guess the motor was kept running & sufficiently warm. So not much complaint from him once school started. He is also cruising quite well despite his classmates saying the teaching pace is very fast in P5. There is a big jump in content & thinking skills required.

Not suggesting kiasu parents torture their kids with zero relaxation during the hols, but maybe u can consider this plan for your P4 kids in future.

For language English, not much jump, from (P4 to P5).


But for (Maths & Science), the gap in jump is quite big, from (P4 to P5).

For Standard Chinese, not much jump.

Rather than worry too much about the drop in marks because of the jumps every couple of years, teach your kids to expect these jumps and figure out what works best for them in overcoming and adjusting. There will be many more jumps - S1, S3, J1, Poly/Univ, every new job or promotion, marriage, having kids… Some people can make quantum leaps and need very little adjustment. Others need time to work up to the new level, and the initial phase can see a drop in performance, and increase in stress, etc. Once the child understands himself (and when the parent understand the child), they will all cope better.

Hi ZM - after reading your post I polled my kids cos they still seem relative \"free\" after school. Answer is \"spend every free minute in school finishing hw so that have more playtime at home\" ...

Our “MYE” SA1 not full paper, Compo & 作文 only . SA2 60%. If don’t train stamina, sure will KO.

The jump from p4 to p5 is something they may not have experienced and, thus may find it hard to adjust to the "higher" level of expectations. That happened to my kids and it took a while for them to really adjust. Expect sudden drop in grades for some of the subjects like Science for my kids.

Out of curiosity, you mean the papers for HA classes different from other classes?
