Hi, thanks for this effort. Really appreciate it. I think the poll is very useful. May I know if the clean up is done and the poll is closed? Thank you very much.

      :thankyou:
Clean up is done, poll will close tonight 2359. Will do a final cleanup after that if necessary.
Just curious how the poll helps for your use case?

My Ds did better expected so we are rethinking of our choices.

Based on 7M, is the following option acceptable.

        1) HCI (Cop 7M)
        2) DHS (Cop 8D)
        3) VS IP (Cop 9)
        4) CHS (Cop 9M)
        5) TJC (Cop 9)
        6) NJC (Cop 7)

NJC is kind of wasted choice and we thinking of replacing with CCHM. Prefer IP school. Not so keen on IB and RVHS is too far for us.

Imagine production lines. Simply put, MOE will first line all the AL4 in their respective first choices. As long as there is still vacancy, they are in. If any school has no more vacancy (which according to MOE’s simulation is not likely for AL4 and AL5 students), the sorting machine will move on to their second choice and the whole process repeats until all the AL4s get posted.
Next will be the AL5 and the same process goes.
Coming to AL6, IF anyone’s first choice school is full (not saying it will happen), it moves down to the next choice and so on. Balloting only starts when the no of vacancies at any stage is lesser than the no of students with same AL level and same choice ranking level. For the ones taking HCL and applying for SAP schools, AL6D, 6M and 6P ranks higher than AL6. D ranks higher than M and M ranks higher than P. Then of choice citizenship now comes into play (for those on exact same AL and choice ranking). Hope this is clear and simple enough.

This year, no one can tell u what are your chances for getting into a school if your AL is the same as the MOE simulated cut off, because last year’s parents chose their schools based on t score, and choice ranking didn’t matter. All we know is last year’s parents are definitely more gung-ho because the kids’ scores are more finely differentiated (over 200 t scores outcome) vs AL with only 29 outcomes AND they can place their options to try until they get the best possible cut off school. In fact after this exercise, I dare to predict no one will know for sure for next year too. It will take some years for this sorting system to stabilize and for parents to understand that we should choose the school based on what we or our kids like about the school rather than based on best available options using psle exam scores.

So pick your schools based on what u and your child like about the school, location and culture. Similarly, overthinking and trying to adopt a “safe” strategy might result in regret if u don’t want your boastful neighbor to rave about how their child got into the “better” AL school compared to yours simply because u didn’t even try. :spank:[/quote]
Agree, another factor is COVID, parents may favour nearer schools so as not to expose their kids to public transport for extended time.

            Hi MaisyDaisy

Why don't you put NJC as 2nd choice? I find that your son has good chance for NJC at 2nd choice, without compromising the rest of his choices.

Other than that, I suppose you covered all IP school (non IB, non RI, non girl schools, non RVHS). He would have gotten into one of the choices.

            Congrats & Good Luck !

Looks good to me. While it most probably won’t matter, I would still replace NJC with a more logical choice as the 6th option, for the sake of completeness.

Thanks for preparing the poll. The results are skewed because the parents who participated in the poll would be the more concerned ones. AL4 and AL5 are definitely the top 3% of the cohort because these are the ones awarded with ESIS. For simplicity, I have simply divided by a factor of 4, for my purpose of computing where my DD stand against the cohort.

Total holders of AL4 and 5, you divide by a factor of 4, it is somewhere near 3%.
Total holders of AL8 or below (i.e. eligible for 3rd language), you divide by a factor of 4, it is somewhere near 10% which is within expectation.

I am still curious, for each subject, whether MOE imposes a bell shaped curve or not. I think in future years when such poll is gathered, compiling the per subject AL would be useful information for parents of future batches of PSLE students.

Err... I'm stupid. Why divide by 4 hah? And divide what by 4?

Is it mean the 4 subjects?

                      Cumulative % holders of AL 4 and AL 5 = 6.86% + 6.05% = 12.91%

                      I rebase this to 3%, hence divide by a factor of 4.3. (i.e. 12.91% divide by 4.3% = 3%)

                      Cross check - Cumulative % holders till AL8 = 38.04%, divide by 4.3, is about 8.84 %

So to divide by a factor of 4.3 is to correct the skewed results. This is just my way, no mathematical principle behind. That’s why I said divide by 4 earlier for simplicity.

                        Found this picture https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8pfHGzjGHbY/XeZwml_lAqI/AAAAAAABRFc/baagkOyA7WsgKIt5a9vYj3hjhEPwiHTpgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-20191128-WA0002.jpg

                        if it's true then:
                        250+ can range from 12.9% in 2018 to 10% in 2019;
                        240+ from 35% in 2018 to 23% in 2019.
That means the number of AL8 to AL12 will fluctuate a lot from year to year?
