No one knows for sure but it is unclear to me whether students who enter via DSA Academic domains are strongly biased towards AL4s and AL5s vs. AL6s+ (obviously still very good scores).
Some of the confusion over choice order and merit (AL score) is probably caused by a misestimate of the # of AL4 and AL5 students. If we assume the total % of AL4 + AL5 students is 3%, that translates to 1173 students. Of these, I guess at least half would already be admitted through DSA. That leaves about, let's say, 600 to go through S1 posting. Divide that by half gives 300 boys and 300 girls (more likely 200 boys vs. 400 girls). Unless they all somehow choose the same school as their first choice, then there is no possibility that AL4 or AL5 would not get into their first choices.
As many have said, no school has a COP below AL6. No point worrying about those lucky ones with AL4 and 5 -- they will all get in their first choice, while still leaving spaces (not sure how many though) in every school for the rest.
In the past, I believe the vast majority of DSA Academic could meet the COP based on PSLE results. Part of this was due to the fact the very very high scores in your \"talent\" subject helped to boost the overall t-score. But under AL since 90 and 100 are both AL1, the subject geniuses no longer get any leverage out the best subject and AL4-AL5 means you are just good at everything (perhaps >90 should be described in a different way than \"just good\"
).
Combined with the fact that the AL COP will involve many more students than in the past, there's a reasonable case that the DSA Academic took out less of the supply of students \"well inside\" (i.e. high or best scorers) of the COP vs years past. Again, no one knows for sure, and I wouldn't suggest anyone behaves differently with their choices but it's something to think about.
That being said, there are definitely going to be students who got AL4-AL5 and also got a CO/WL converted (froma ll of academic, sports, leadership, CCA, etc); there's no shortage of really bright kids that work hard to put up great results! -

Don't worry, the figures are likely to be wrong. In the old way of PSLE T-Score, if there are 40,000 students, then the 20,000th student will have a T-score of 200. The figure for 2018 is definitely wrong.

250+ can range from 12.9% in 2018 to 10% in 2019;
240+ from 35% in 2018 to 23% in 2019.
That means the number of AL8 to AL12 will fluctuate a lot from year to year? -

First off, let’s recognise that attending any top sch can be stressful in itself, much of which may be self-induced. One can be a top performer in pri sch, only to find himself below average studying in these 2 sch. This is bcoz almost everyone else - bar some DSA students - would also be a top performer in his pri sch.

Well, somebody will be at the top, and somebody else has to be at the bottom.
I feel that 2 traits are crucial for IP students to succeed. First is that one has to adjust his expectation. For 99% of the IP students out there, there will be someone smarter, more motivated, learn faster, score higher than himself. So kids have to learn to accept it’s alright not be at the top all the time, and not give oneself too much pressure to succeed. Also in IP, it’s challenging to be scoring > 90% like in pri sch. In fact, in RI, scoring 80% for a subject is already considered excellent and will be awarded the max GPA 4.0.
The other trait I feel is paramount is that one has to be an independent learner. In this sense, the GEP kids do have an initial advantage due to their prior training. However, the motivated MS kids will catch up by end Y1, or at most at Y2. It’s nothing unsurmountable.
How best to deal with stress is large dependent on individuals. As parents, we can be that assuring voice and safety net for our kids when they are faced with issues. We should focus on the effort and not solely on the result. It would greatly aid our kids when we seek to understand (not judge or reprimand) and offer a listening ear to their problems.
As for culture and camaraderie, both sch published a ton of information at their respective websites. There’s no better place to search than there. -

My DS scored AL7. we couldn't decide if IB or A level is a better choice for him.
Here is our choice order
1)ACSI IP (COP 7) - IB
2) NJC (COP 7)
3)HCI (COP 7M)
4) SJI IP (COP
-IB
5) DHS (COP 8D)
6) CHS (COP8M)
otherwise 1st choice NJC. then 2nd HCI, 3rd.........
the reason we didn't choose HCI as 1st ,bcs we're worried we wasted the 1st choice order since my kid has no HCL. and ASCI & NJC as second/ third option is even riskier, there is high chance ASCI and NJC tie break at AL7.
the reason why we still include it is because , we are \"hoping\" IF HCI 2021 COP happened to be AL8M, then we might be able to appeal?
I assumed the safety net is choice 4-6? or is it risky?
May I ask if our choices are logical? if we exclude IB, there's not much IP school left and DS still prefers IP .
been so stress with the choice orders....

#1. Without HCL, I think the logic on ACS(I) and NJC before HCI makes sense. You should be able to appeal to HCI if the COP is AL7 flat or AL8(D)+ (lower ranking score). Here is the appeal form HCI is using and the information they are looking for. I'd suggest you take a look at it and make some assessment of where you may stand (should AL7 be the COP). Either way, unless you have a need another space it would be fine to leave it in the #3 spot for hopes of an appeal.

#2. Everyone's risk tolerance is different but I would sleep better if my #6 choice was something with a higher AL COP (lower ranking score). I think this is particularly relevant here, given DHS and CHS are both SAP schools. In the event there are more lower (better) scores than last year (I'm not saying this will be the case) or choice patters are different and these two were to move to AL7 something (along with SJI IP), unfortunately you will be later in the queue again after those with HCL for two of the three schools here. To be clear, I don't think it's likely all three are AL7 something but I'd also just want a bit more certainty on the last choice (others may disagree here).
Other IP options like VS (also AL8 though), TJC, or RVHS may provide a bit more comfort. Or one of the O-Level choices as a safety net even if that is not preferred.

But that does not mean the Median (20,000 out of 40,000) t-score is also 200. In fact, 66% or so of the cohort typically qualified for Express, which would suggest the Median is > Mean.
MOE also said this year that half the kids are scoring above 75 per subject (lowest mark in AL4). Yet Express was not set at AL16 total but AL20. I think this also suggests that the Median > Mean.
I can't vouch for the numbers posted either way but I don't think it's obvious they are incorrect. If I recall correctly, 2019 PSLE Top 10% was 250 (HMT and Third Language Eligibility) so that looks about right if 2019 = 2019 PSLE (and not 2019 Sec 1). -

Actually you can remove your 3rd choice HCI because it is unlikely to drop to 8(M). In the event your DS meets the actual COP of HCI, you can always appeal. Then insert for 6th choice a school with COP AL9 (TJC or RVHS) as a safety net. -

Pardon me for asking.. For appeal to be considered, do we need to include the school in one of our 6 choices, or as long as we meet COP, we can try hantam?

Feel that with AL system, it s gonna be chaotic, and appeal processing time will take longer.
