To ask the Minister for Education in light that fewer than 15 per cent of secondary school students get enough of the recommended daily eight hours of sleep and experts on children and sleep advocate starting school no earlier than 8.30 am, whether there are plans to revise the starting time for all primary, secondary and pre-tertiary schools to later than 8.30am.

1. International research has established that amount and quality of sleep is influenced by multiple factors, such as circadian rhythm, exercise, and sleep habits. MOE has also recently commissioned two research studies, on the impact of factors affecting sleep duration and sleep quality of our students in Singapore. This will help us better understand how later school start time could contribute to students' longer sleep duration.

2. Currently, schools start no earlier than 7.30a.m. Schools have the autonomy to adopt a later school start time, taking into consideration factors such as parents' feedback, school end time, impact on after-school and inter-school programmes, transport provisions and traffic situation around their schools.

3. MOE will consider the results of the local and overseas research. Apart from whether school start time should be delayed, we will need to work with parents to improve sleep hygiene, manage the overall load on students as well as their use of digital devices.

I thought someone said that CCHM is already starting at 8am? I think schools starting at 8:30am might be problematic for parents who fetches their kids to school, but who has to be in the office by 8am.

Some kids are known to play on digital devices until wee hours. Cut down on playing digital device may help in getting more sleeping hours

“Considering School end time” could mean if start school 1 hour later would mean end school 1 hour later too. And reach home, take dinner, do homework and sleep 1 hour later. That still may not achieve the objective of more sleeping time as a result.

Same point mentioned above:cutting down on playing on digital devices could increase sleeping hours.

Someone did ask the ex principal before this question: such long day for the students, how could they cope? Ex principle answer: many batches of students have gone through such routine without any issue.

Yes, students are required to wear the cchm socks on school days.

Under normal situations, students should reach school by 7:20am on Mon to Wed and on Fri; and by 8:30am on Thurs. This is when they get ready for flag raising. I tend to drop my kids off at 7:10am or 8:15am.

However, during covid, staggered timing was introduced. So there may be changes in reporting time for different levels. Parents are well informed when there are any changes.

Oh no…we were there to purchase the uniforms & books but nobody told us about the socks. We have missed out on the socks purchase. Is it alright to wear normal white socks instead?

Previously, teacher did check on the students occasionally but not sure about now. My younger one never got checked but elder one did. Guess can still buy it when school starts. Just tell teacher didn't manage to buy the socks if checked. It's covid time so not all will be able to get everything before school starts. ; )
