My son used to love and are very strong in Maths and Science. After his first term in Year one, he told me he enjoyed Literature, Humanities and Philosophy. I am gald he did not choose to go NUSH and have the opportunity to explore other areas. He is now sharing this experience with his primary schools student and friends.

Ya..right...they should enjoy as much as they can while they are in the school....bcos after that everything will be totally different. They will become a scientific researchers or you call scientists and mathematicians whatever...then, you will receive a meagre salary while you see your primary school classmates who have become lawyers, doctors and mnc's high management making big bucks. You will toil long hours in the labs doing plumbing works, washing test tubes while you wonder where is the idea of a scientist when you are still at NUSH.

Is it difficult to go into another stream in the Uni after graduating from NUSH? I always think of Sec Sch/JC as a ticket to Uni.

U think about it. The fact that one says he has a passion for maths and science in their early age already limit their choice of profession. It is not that NUSH limit your prospect. It is your own interest and your own choice that limit yourselves. Of course, I think smart people can always switch from areas to areas with great ease since they learn things quickly.

Children changes very quickly. Primary school only learn 4 subjects. If you are good in maths and science, you won in competitions like olimpiak whatever, you get the praise. Of course people like to be praised especially children. And that may be mistaken as passion for the real subjects. this is the real danger.

Some people like its modular system, especially those who used to study in non-local school. Not sure what is their CL & HCL standard and expectation like in their promostional criteria?

As I understand, for CL and HCL, the school is governed by MOE, so no difference from other sec schools.

Whether a must to pass mother tongue or higher mother tongue a promotional criteria in NUSH?

MT or HMT is not a promotional requirement for NUS High.

My son is in NUS High Year 2. For those who are interested to know, the coverage for Maths & Science subjects is more advanced than mainstream schools (same level), including the other IP schools. Unlike mainstream schools where students must take all arts & humanities subjects (Hist, Geog, Lit, Music etc.) in Sec 1 & 2, NUS High students only need to meet a certain minimum module credit requirements. The system suits my son very well, who opts not to take Lit at all. This year, he will not be taking Hist.

Students who have shown very strong aptitude in Maths & Science subjects are allowed to accelerate i.e. a Year 1 student can join Year 3 class for Maths. I don’t think most of the IP schools have this flexibility. This is another strong point for NUS High.

Just to add, though MT is not a promotional requirement for 2-Year by 2-Year promotion criteria, to graduate with award of the NUS High School Diploma, students must still fulfill the minimum MT requirement as required by MOE.
