When the P6 kids move to secondary curriculum, its totally a different ball game, i presume all will start from ground zero with so many more subjects to deal with.
I had my worries initially for my 13yr old, who's in Yr1 now, he made his choice and accepted the academic challenge as he DSA to an IP school. ITs EOY exam now and i think he's doing fine.

Once the offer is given to your child, maybe u should cancel out the noises and stop worrying about your child’s psle score vs the AL required to enter the school. Indeed in secondary school, the psle score doesn’t matter anymore. Everyone starts with a clean slate. At this new starting line, what matters is the student’s attitude towards learning, and how determined your child is to finish this race. I have seen students of different batches, with varying scores, all coping ok over the years. The selection panel puts in effort to only pick the ones whom they think can make it for the academic rigors. Trust in the process. But do also have a good chat with your child to make sure both parent and child are picking the school for the right reasons, and not because of its brand name. I always tell my children that a dsa confirmed offer is a special pass for u to come into the school, but it doesn’t guarantee graduation from the school. Every student, whether coming in by dsa or psle score, needs to work hard towards their graduation and towards the O/A level score they want to achieve. So pick the school that u think can bring out the best in your child. Your child must have done something right in the specific dsa dormain to have received a CO/WL, so do encourage them to use that same grit and determination on this new academic journey in the new school. The day your kid start Sec 1, everything has been reset, start afresh all over again. Everyone start from the same, identical starting point, when the whistle is blown, to run another brand new race again for Youth, starting from Sec 1, all the way to A-level or to Poly, and later onto university.
Remember this key important point. Your past does NOT determine your present nor your future ! Hence, your past PSLE AL score is No longer even worth mentioning anymore, because is useless & pointless.
Why ?
Because
If you keep harping on, keep comparing your past AL PSLE actual score vs. against the official school's entry score,
And
Suppose
If your past PSLE AL score is poor, way below the official Cut off point, then, what's going to happen ?
At the back of your mind,
u often question yourself, self doubt begin to creep in?
\"Oh dear! My PSLE AL score Is way beneath the actual school's official Cut off point, quite bad. Oh No ! I don't think I am able to cope in my studies, in this new DSA Secondary school .... \"
You know, our mind sometimes can be an enemy to yourself. Meaning that, the greatest enemy can be yourself.
That is,
the thing you fear most, or dreaded most, actually can become self prophesize.
So, do not let this negative self doubt thoughts to enter your mind, do not let your thoughts wander, try to crush you, defeat you, destroy you, emotionally. Instead, tell yourself aloud \" my past is no longer important. I am going to start my brand new Sec 1 school life afresh, do my very best and fill myself to the fullest, in whatever I can learn or experience, in my new Secondary school life. My past is behind me. Past is already past, whatever PSLE AL score I had, be it low or high. I press on ... forward instead, with courage, with boldness ! \" -
It’s commonly discussed and told to us exercise is good for health. But what next ?
I would want to find out next, exactly how much health benefits (out of curiosity) or put into actions an exercise regime.
It’s also well discussed that DSA gives students some academic leeway to get into the desired school. curious, exactly how much can the leeway be - a “what next?” perspective. From a parent’s PM reply I learn that the academic leeway is reasonably substantial. -
Previously I am in a dilemma as my girl did not score well at all in prelims hence I was hesitating if we should continue to try for the IP school which she wants. She was far from the cut off of that school but was offered a WL.
I spoke to a number of parents and teachers including one who is from that IP school. In general from what I gather, it is only the parents who are more concern and is comparing the PSLE score and the school’s cut off. The teachers on the other hand care more about the student’s attitude. A number of friends were discouraging us from trying for the IP school due to my girl’s prelims score. On the other hand, all the teachers I spoke to (who know my girl personally) told her to go for it and emphasis on having the correct attitude upon entering the school. They as teachers have seen a lot, all kinds of students and it really doesn’t matter what PSLE score they had, once their attitude is wrong and they took the easy way out, the result most likely will be a dropout.
The DSA community are looking beyond the academic nowadays. Its the soft skills which they are looking for which will carry the students through the tough secondary school life, balancing both studies and the DSA talent area. -
Singapore education policies are driven by statistics. MOE will be looking at the numbers collected over the years to gauge the impacts of programs, including DSA. MOE could easily monitor those DSA students’ performance in school with COP to AL score gap, both small or big, and constantly optimising the program by tweaking, again with new statistics that may reflect changes in the ground/world situations from year to year . We should reasonably believe the overall soundness of policies.

I think to trust in your instinct if you have a good relationship with your child and know how much efforts he/she has already put in vs the ability. There are kids who have already put in a lot of efforts and that’s commendable but you know the standard is at the certain point. So you would not want to push the kid too much. On the other hand, there are playful kids who have not been putting in much efforts all this while but woke up and you suddenly realise he/she has this potential. On the other spectrum, you have kids who over prepped all these years and therefore could do well but after you take away all the help in sec, they cannot perform as well anymore, coupled with the fact they were not given chance to even “fall behind” before in pri sch. Trust in your child and all the best!

Hi can I check if the child enters into the secondary school via DSA O level track but does well enough in PSLE to achieve the IP track in the same school (school offers both IP and O level). Is it possible to appeal to transfer to IP track instead?

Those teachers who I spoke to, mostly know my girl personally. This include a school teacher who is our direct neighbor, her tutor, a family friend who knows everything about my kids and she is teaching in a IP school. Her 3 years form teacher who is in close contact with us. My girl is committed to her talent which requires insane hours of training thus tuition is minimum. And this year, she went through a lot (including injury) which impact her performance in her talent as well as mental stress arising from it. Yes, Parents will know best but when the path our kids choose are not the normal or popular ones, we tend to doubt ourselves too.
Anyway, just sharing our journey for this DSA route.
