Many interesting comments on Chinese language and dialects. After observing a few different kids here, there is an environment to learn Mandarin and advance your capabilities. However, I think the reality for most kids is that the majority of their lives are in English, and there are a lot of other things to do in secondary school/JC so Chinese often falls down the totem pole of priorities (maybe sadly).
I think I also now understand why some people aren’t so hot on spending time on Chinese in secondary school, even if you are good at it (or at least not bad at it). Whether you take CL or HCL, perhaps you will be reasonably functional on a daily basis, and that is good enough. Unfortunately, there is only so much time in the day and often doing more here means doing less of something else.
For the schools that offer both, I also believe the Bicultural Studies class has a higher take up than the CL Lit class. In the grand scheme of things, both are probably dwarfed by math/science related stuff. -
Up to their own interests ba. While SG seems to glorify math & science, and majority tend to have a natural flair for those, we will always have language enthusiasts. And we need them too. Likewise for musicians and sportspersons.

For clarity, there is nothing in the above that says a student should take X or Y or that X > Y (or Y > X). Simply an observation that even in a place with Chinese offerings (and kids that are capable), many still pick something else.

My personal opinion is that more kids would probably benefit from 2x Science and 2x Humanities (if not more schools offering 3x Humanities as well). Yet, I'm sure this will be met with some justification of why 3x Science is OK, which is also true.
Anyways, take what you are interested in, or can score in, or whatever you need to jump through various hoops. I'll see myself out of this discussion... -

Thank you. I am not from Chung Cheng High Secondary school.....not very convenient to disclose which school I came from. Yes, I had to memorise lot of 文言文 (such as 杨修之死) in school. I love reading Chinese romance noval from Taiwan and Hong Kong like 琼瑶和亦舒 when I was small and now also indulge in translated detective story from Japan 东野圭吾.......

lack of Geog teachers in sec sch.
I remember DD2 was shortlisted by teacher to do Chinese Lit during sec sch days and she was ok to do it. But we advised her not to and asked her to apply for Bicultural studies instead, which has a lot more takers than Chinese Lit.
As for Geography, one of my neighbor’s kid studied Geo and couldn’t find a suitable job in SG for a long time. So he migrated to New Zealand to be a land surveyor there. These past few years, heard he was doing very well $$ because a lot of PRCs went there to buy land for their houses.
my cousin also studied Geog in nus, i think MOH take in geo grads too , something abt national health policy etc
Geo, sociology grads can work in policy making dept in some ministries , or NEA weather etc i suppose.. -
Finally can access ksp!

There's also a lot of geospatial technology-related areas of work these days.

However, I really think we must encourage students, teachers and parents to look at education more broadly. Especially in the humanities and social sciences, there is no reason why a job needs to be directly related to the area of study. University education should be viewed as first and foremost about learning how to learn, and experiencing both depth and breadth of learning, and less about being pigeon-holed into a particular area of work. Those 4 years are a time of developing the mind - and that is easier if the student is more interested in the subject matter.
Other than professions (doctor, dentist, pharmacist, accountant, engineer, etc) there are many jobs that don't require any particular field of study.
