The irony of this system is
89.54 is AL4
894 is AL8
But this may be statistically less likely. But if it happens to someone…too bad or too lucky -

I still like T score which is computed based on statistical difference. Knew of someone with 4A* and 3A*1A only 1 mark difference (which should be the case they should be eligible for the same schools) rather than the AL which could mean huge disparity and Sch allocation. Back to what someone says, maybe G is trying to reallocate the brilliant ones to feed into different top schools to dilute the “top school” effect.

IfI was the education minister, I would have said, keep the tscore and

260+ is AL1
257+ is AL2
254+ is AL3
and so on......every 3 points in tscore is one AL level.
Too bad that I am not the minister

Min said the introduction of AL is to stop comparison and focus on yourself not to chase the last point haha……parents need mindset change haha….

i think if S1 posting exercise is \"Live\" update, maybe parents wouldnt chase the last point that hard and move on to another school if their selection falls out of the choice.

People don't change because the government told them to. They will change if they want to.
For example, when 50% MPs and ministers send their children and grandchildren to neighborhood secondary schools even when they are eligible for Top schools, then parents will change. -

Yes
Unlikely because everyone who scored AL8 is offered Cat 3 third language.
No one who scored AL9 is eligible for Category 3 languages
At AL 9,
u still can enter into certain IP schools, like, for example,
(Temasek Junior College, River Valley High). If refer back to certain past years, the Cut off point for IP (TJC) back then, was AL 9.
However,
even after admission into these IP schools (TJC + River Valley High), there will still be some students, that is, those who scored AL 9, not allowed to study 3rd language ( MOELC), just because missed by one point to AL 8, the Cut off point for 3rd language, specified by MOELC.
Unfortunate, isn't it ?
Just missed by merely one point !
Not say, missed by a few points.
That means,
inside these two IP schools (River Valley High + Temasek JC) :-
while u see all your fellow Sec 1 classmates / schoolmates chit chatting happily after school dismissed on one weekday afternoon, all travelling down excitedly to Bishan / Newton foreign language classroom or language lab premises, to learn
( Japanese / German / Spanish / French) for the next 4 enriching years of their Secondary school life,
sadly,
those who have scored AL 9,
even though their hearts desire and long for learning of a 3rd language, also cannot go there. Not given a chance, unlike those who have scored AL 8, or better. This is how strict ... MOELC is. -
Many years ago during my daughter’s time, the cutoff for French was way higher than 252. Only the really brilliant ones were accepted into the French classes.

Based on my son’s experience, I want to say not all Al 4-8 pointers want to take third language. Many of my son’s classmates who achieved Al 4-5 didn’t take third language at all. And for high demand, even some students who got Al 8 can not learn Japanese. This happened in 2021. And just curious, how do you find there are more Al 4 or 5 pointers this year? My DD is in the best class in her school and this year only 4 got al4, less than my DS’s class in 2021. And since esis is still awarded to al5 pointers or less, same as 2021, roughly the number of al 4-5 pointers should be the same.

Don't be sad, most students drop the third language in the first year.
