I thought under the new system, H1 subject is only included if it improves your UAS. Same goes for MTL if you take it.
      70 = 3H2 + 1GP

So, does taking the 4H2 still makes sense or should just focus on the 3H2 subjects? What are the benefit of taking the 4th H2, looks better on application to Uni? I genuinely want to know what's the reason to take 4H2s even for existing 90RP system, when I could just take 3H2s and 1 H1 and just focus on scoring those? Sorry, newbie in this...
According to my DD1, its all about portfolio. 4H2 plus H3 if feasible will give a better edge in terms of Uni admission (if he or she is eyeing courses with more stringent entry requirements) and/or scholarship, etc...

      4H2 could just drop to 3H2 and 1 H1 if can't cope in J2.

        Kimkar,

Since your son / daughter has just completed A-Level last year (2023), still very fresh, don’t mind if u show us an example,

let’s say, take PCME 4 H2 subject combination,

so as to understand better (clearer), showing your computation, under the new "70 RP rebased" system:-

        1) one situation, whereby your #4 H2 subject, does help to improve RP

        And

        2) in another situation, whereby your #4 H2 subject, does NOT help to improve your RP ?

        Thank you, for clarification.

Under the 90RP calculation (which both my daughters were under), the 90 is made up this way:

          3 H2s: 20+20+20
          4th H2 or H1 content subject: 10 [the 4th H2 gets the same points as and H1]
          GP: 10
          PW: 10

From what I know, based on RP90 system, \"rebased\" computation will come in when MTL is counted as H1 score in the RP computation as total RP will be 100, so rebase to 90.

Othw, 4th H2 will be auto-drop to H1 if the grade is the weakest.

U may want tk refer to the link below for more clarification if it helps.
            https://www.sgunistats.com/calculator

So it seems like the RP70 or RP90 works on the same basis. Weaskest 4th H2 or H1 or MTL if taken now, will be rebase if it Improves the RP score.

I spoke to my children’s Sec. Sch. mate who is now J2 in NYJC. I asked him what’s the reason NYJC consistently doing well in A level. He said due to NYJC mugging culture. After lessons ended for the day, students will study in library/ at tables around the school. the school is pack with students studying after lessons. It’s common for students go back school during weekend/PH to study. Many class tests. Not short quiz but hour long test. Those fail class test compulsory to attend remedia lesson. Students frequently seeking consultation with teachers. He says culture is that students think they have to be productive once they step into the school.

Seem like good old fashion studying hard is the

reason NYJC A level results are better than IP schools, and a proof with confidence, that PSLE results are not deterministic of future academic performance?

How NYJC inculcate such work hard mindset in their students, batch after batch? NYJC good at motivating students ?

To be honest, i would not want my child to be in a school that is excessive in mugging. I will rather that he has a balanced JC life where other all aspects are developed uniformly. Employees today do not look solely on grades anymore. (In fact there are already so many kids out there with perfect scores). You need to stand out with other abilities in your interview and portfolio.

Just curious, has NYJC produce any President scholars?

mugging' is another word for studying and 'mugger' is to describe a very studious person.

Nice words to use- to study consistently in JC which is less than 2 yrs span then its A level.
JC is the toughest hurdle, then in Uni can relax more as its not so paper n pen kind exams.

Bad choice of words used by parents/students jealous of Nyjc and to scare potential students applying Nyjc- mugging.

There is definitely a balanced JC Nyjc life- with many allocated Ny college events to participate/chill on from Nyjc Calendar events.
                        Its how students manage time.

Nyjc has a conducive study campus- campus is opened on weekends for students.
Ny students love to study inside college with peers, chill at Nex for a decent meal/nearby popular coffeeshop, then back in campus to continue study or CCAs.
Its a healthy motivation amongst the Ny students, rallying one another to study consistently.
They study openly, no closet where other JC kids go back to mug or study at home.

Which JCs you go dont need you to study or mug regularly, pls. Unless you want bad rp.

                        President scholars?
Is your DC a scholar in the first place?
Same old topic keeps dwelling about President scholars😁
