Hi,


Any parents out there considering between St. Joseph Institution Junior (SJIJ) and Maris Stella (MS)?

Can some kind souls please share your experience or any news/ views between these 2 schools. I am hearing very mixed reviews about both schools (both good and bad) and I need to make a decision SOON since getting into Catholic High is a super long shot with 9 places left for Phase 2B

MS => SAP School? (Yes)

SJIJ => SAP School? (No?)

I understand your dilemma. I am wondering about the same myself.

MS: good primary school but its secondary school is not good. Pri is a SAP school but my son is not SAP material. If my son cannot make it to a better secondary school and end up in MS (Sec), it will not be good for him.

SJI Jnr: mediocre primary school but its secondary school is much better that MS (Sec). Its non Higher Chinese may be a blessing in disguise for my son. If my son cannot make it to a better secondary school and end up in SJI, it may have been a good thing.

To me, Maris Stella or SJIJ, both are Catholic School. I think they should be equally good. I am more towards MS because of the SAP school status. I personally feel Chinese is very important. Also, I can imagine how difficult it is for me to drive to SJIJ in the morning peak hour. From there, I need to travel all the way to Jurong to work. That is the deciding factor for me right now.

Hi,

These three schools are not located very near each other, plus 2 of your choices are rather popular schools. Perhaps you should first consider which is the one that is nearest to you, i.e. within 1km from your residence.

The school from my house in above 2 km. Is there a chance ??

While people may think that Chinese is important, I will see if my child is the "chinese" material. I was from a mission school and during then, lots of my classmates struggled with Chinese as a 2nd language. They scored straight A1s except for Chinese where C6 was a miracle. In the end, they couldn’t go to JC because lots of them failed Chinese. Lucky for them, their very wealthy parents sent them to States and Canada for studies and they are all professionals now (eg directors, dentists, doctors). So, I’ll see if my son is the type who can handle higher chinese. If he is not apt in it, Maris Stella however a good school it is, may be his downfall.

I was from a sap school but my son is in SJIJ and daughter going to IJ school. Initially, quite adamant on sending kids to SAP school , but was convinced by DH to send them to schools that fits them most. We consider our kids ability in Chinese, their attitude towards learning, their interests & their character too in coming to a conclusion. We want them to enjoy their time in the school and not have to struggle in keeping up. Hopefully, along the way, we will not kill their interests in learning and when they are in their teenage years, be self motivated in their learning journey.

I assume you are referring to registration in phase 2C? I'm afraid you won't have the chance to register as there has been balloting for registrants staying 1-2km from the school, for the past few years.

Btw, where do you stay?

THANK YOU so much for sharing your thoughts and views on both schools. Very enlightening as it didn't cross my mind for some of the view points raised. I'm much more at ease (and peace) now going into Phase 2B in 2 days' time
