Compare RGS vs NYGH

Augmum:
And if it is true that RGS is moving in 2014 to Braddell, we may see the COP drop even more in the coming years.
but the fact is in recent years,
RGS COP is dropping in yr 2007 from 266 to last year of 260. -

I prefer RGS. Reason : it took my DD1 2 hrs to reach home after CCA when she was in NYPS, I do not wish to see her suffer for another 6 yrs. It's easier to travel to RGS. I let her made the final decision, DD1 chose RGS last year.Okay may be I should started another \"wicked\" thread.
If your girl has offers both from RGS and NYGH, which will you choose ? -
Busymom:
Why leh? Braddell fengshui no good meh?

No lah, I'm not implying Braddell's fengshui is no good.
Just thinking that many students from NYPS, RGPS, SCGS, etc. may be residing near Bukit Timah area. If RGS moves to Braddell, it may defer some of these students from going to RGS at the new location. It would have been more convenient to go to NYGH or NJC instead. -
Busymom:
I don't think it will have that great an impact. If RGS is your dream school you will choose to go there no matter what. And Braddell is not that far from the current RGS location. It's only 10mins by car.No lah, I'm not implying Braddell's fengshui is no good.

I wish I have this kind of problem 8 years later...
when my dd is in P6...
I will let my gal choose the school herself, like what Augmum's dd said, must like the school. one other factor to consider is distance.

Busymom:
I don't think COP will be reduced just because there are fewer students residing near Bukit Timah area wanting to travel to Braddell. Firstly I believe RGS girls come from all over Singapore. While the traveling distance is a major consideration it would not outweigh the prestige offered by the school. Secondly girls residing near Bukit Timah doesn't equate better results IMHO.No lah, I'm not implying Braddell's fengshui is no good.

Based on first hand experiences and observations, i would say that RGS culture is v v different from NYGH culture. Thus, your child's decision should be based on which culture she is more comfortable with.
1) English-dominant v chinese-dominant culture
2) RGS - stronger brand name, recognition overseas
3) Links with RI - as a teenage girl, it's just so much more cooler to be associated with RI boys (who are the smartest/most president scholar/etc) don't you think?? Erm, i don't know about now, but in my time, Chinese High boys were just so - geeky and bespectacled and pimply :siam:
4) More vibrant culture and more international exposure and outlook (as opposed to \"only China\")
5) During my time, i remember seeing alot of RGS girls who were very well-rounded in their achievements, whereas NYGH girls (with exceptions of course) tended to be dominantly book-smart with few other interests in say, sports. i used to have both RGS girls and NYGH girls in my French class, and remember noting how the RGS girls tended to be able to excel despite spending alot of time in their other ECAs, whereas NY girls had to mug very very hard in order to score highly in tests. There are exceptions to this of course, i'm just saying \"in general\"....
6) Therefore, i feel that RGS girls tend to be much more well-rounded and, coupled with their strong academic tradition and history - would be my obvious choice -
wow, looks like the fight is getting very close between the two schools
personally, i prefer RGS. agreed with koolmama on some of her points, mainly on the culture part n the fact that NYGS girls r usually those who truly studied very hard whereas RGS girls stand out as all-rounders. i like the fact that RGS girls r more opinionated, able to articulate their thoughts well. basically i m very impressed wif most of the RGS girls i've met - including those who have grown up n established themselves in the working world.
NYGS girls' strength lies in their diligence, and the traditional values the school keeps - generally, i think they will make great wives to their hsbands and good mothers to their children
these r the impressions they have made in me thru my life experiences. naturally not all students in the same school r moulded in the same way, however there wil always be a certain image projected into the public's eye. so i would advise for sec school, parents should take into consideration the child's character/ \"pattern\" whether its a match to the sch, rather than the distance travelled.
