What's your favourite words to your kids?

I can't help feeling comforted reading this thread. Makes me feel I'm not alone. Really must commend moms who put in effort to find other ways of \"nagging\" because it isn't easy when it develops into a habit and becomes the most spontaneous response. I always remind myself to \"change my words\", \"be more encouraging\", \"hold my tongue, it doesn't help\" and so on, but when you see that finger going into his/her mouth, you tongue starts to lash again... :stupid:

And when she does something naughty or cries when she falls (she's walking but shakily), I say to her:\"Come on sweetheart, you can do better than that.\"

This one is positive reinforcement. My ds's kiddy principal also advised me to use this method. Btw, you're not a kiddy principal are you? That will be too much of a coincidence.

It's just that it's much faster to say 'why still cannot?' And ds will follow up with 'I can, just that I don't want to do it now'

Share an anecdote with you. When they was kids, DH and his younger brother were VERY naughty. To get into their antics will take this off topic. Anyhoo, MIL was very much a dragon lady. One time, they were up to no good again, she asked them, \"Do you know what flying saucer is?\" Being boys, they were super anticipative and nodded furiously. The next second, she threw a flying pan at them.

So now when DH makes me angry, my favorite words to him are: \"Do you know what a flying saucer is?\"

Well I will try to praise my kids as well quite often cause this encourage them to do better however sometimes I need to stop praising them cause it will go into their head as well so need to balance mah..

I suppose its how one puts the message forward to the child and also the circumstances/situation.

At three, DS's confidence/self esteem is still at its infancy. There have been occasions when he did to want to try something. So I have had to persuade him to do and even when it didn't turn out so fantastic and sometimes he senses it, I would still praise him cuz it would be the impetus for him to try out other challenging tasks and slowly build up his confidence.
