Did your kids have headache when their nose were blocked?I wonder sinus will lead to headache? The chinese yam is the one for making yam cake?

      Thanks for sharing

When my elder boy was younger, he cant stay in a cold room for too long, wld get blocked nose and a headache. Now he gets less headache attack (though the nose is only mildly blocked during the rainy days).

That friend who has 3 boys told me her eldest boy will suffer from headache when he has a cold.

According to TCM, when our nose is blocked, the circulation to our brain suffers, hence the cause of headache.

The Chinese yam is not the one used to make yam cake. The Chinese name is huei san, most pple use the dry version in si shen dang.

      :thankyou: jennifer

My son has frequent headache, that may due to his sinus :stupid: How to cook the huei san?

      Thanks for sharing πŸ˜„

You can buy fresh Chinese Yam(huai shan ) from Supermarket...

        Ntuc is the Japanese Type
Shop and Save -I think are the local ones because it comes with lots of sand
        needs washing.

Remove the skin...the inside quite sticky and sometimes your hand will get itchy...

I cook it as a soup...with carrot, red dates, yi zhu and meat(chicken or spare ribs)...

        Hope this will help... πŸ˜„

How to cook the huei san?

I use it in a few recipes (all very simple ones - all diced up):
            1) porridge
            2) shepherd pie/lasagna
            3) soup
            4) pasta

Going to try stir fry with minced pork soon.

I heard from a stallholder that some of her customers juice it with carrot/fruits as part of breakfast beverage. But must use only Japanese ones, cannot use China ones. According to her, China ones cant be eaten raw and it also causes itch if handle with hands without gloves. The Japanese ones are at least 3 times more expensive.

The stalls in wet mkt usu. display the Chinese yam covered with wood shavings. This veg bruises easily. It usu. comes in one long piece. you can request to cut and buy a length you want. Btw, if the insides has lots of black dots, it is turning bad. A fresh one, if uncut, has a bright, almost spotless exterior.

                hquek:
DS1 used to suffer from sniffers in the morning and at night. He ate loads of TCM medication that helped to alleviate a bit, but the problem never really went away.

At someone's recommendation, we used pure sesame oil (NOT the type that's mixed with veg oil). Dip cotton bud into the sesame oil, and dab gently inside the nostrils.

after a couple of weeks, the sinus mysteriously went away. We stopped for a while. There are times when the sniffers come back, we just do the sesame trick a bit and it'll go away again.

Googled and saw some TCM remedy that's available from our kitchens.

                Hi, hquek

May I know where did you buy the pure sesame oil? Thanks!

Hi Jennifer, went to a TCM named YuHong Chinese Medicine on Sat. Is this the one you mentioned?

Was skeptical because it seems like a one man operation and he prescribed base on what I told him, did not look at ds's nose or 'bah mai' 😐

Anyway, ds was given a week's medication...he vomitted the first time, guess it is really bitter.

Will feedback ds's condition after he completes his medication.

                    Vevey:

DS1 was diagnoised w enlarged adenoid (but no bleeding) 3yrs ago. We went thru TCM for 1.5yrs to control his prolonged bad cough due to post nasal drip + Nasonex spray. Now he is still on Nasonex but at 7yo, I guess his passage way has widened & pri sch no aircon, so the blocking is less severe, except during drastic temp change, in dusty places etc, as per usual.
Hi Vevey, thanks for sharing. Did the doctor who diagnosed your ds with enlarged adenoid recommend surgery?

The doctor (who recommended us surgery) mentioned that while such condition may get better when the child grows older but during the growing up years, ds will experience lots of frustration/agitation when he can't sleep well at night due to breathing difficulty and this may in turn affect his learning ability...

Ds used to be a quiet and really good boy but in the past year has became loud, easily agitated and violent. We are really worried that his condition is really affecting him 😞

I believe many parents could have heard of Yu Guo chinese massage centre for babies and children. My son used to have blocked nose with thick dry mucus and I found the therepy done by them useful. They use a simple infra red machine and touch around the nose area of my son and I found it very effective. And there was once my son’s nose was feeling itchy all the time and it was cured by the same therapy also…but I heard it is not so effective on bigger kid/teenage

Yes, he's the one we r seeing. He used to hv a lady assistant, guess few patients so no need for oth staff.

I am surprised he did not check the pulse for a new case. Once he did not do so for my P3 boy n I requested him to do so. Do let us know whether your boy's condition improves.
