      From the papers,

      @phankao

CHS and SNGS are brother / sister way back in the days when CHS is at Queen St and SNGS at Victoria St, they held joint sports day yearly.

When they were both at AMK (CHS Primary was there for a while), there was also joint sports day.

      Now I think no more.
Yes, my boy took part in those joint events . He was at the AMK holding school for 1+yr. SNGS also went to CHS for some joint events after they moved bk to bishan.

In reality, there is no ties, n they are not brother-sister school, since cath high is Maris brothers school and SNGS is IJ school. But from their old location, the proximity made the connection a reality bc parents would send their girls to sngs n boys to chs. and I heard from old boys (yourself included?) that back then, the teachers would give out forms for p1 registration priority if the sibilings are from any of these schools - eg. chs boy's sister would hv priority registration at sngs. Last time not policed by MOE mah for p1 registration.

          CentralControl:
I see some here are comparing alumnis of the new IP schools

          Just wanted to mention this.

I was reading on some book a while ago at the library, forgot which one was it, well it turns out, that there are alot of high ranking officials from the East-India trading company (remember that?) that came from SJI?

          Not to mention some nobles.

can't say for sure though, but if this is true, then its cool.

          tanbh:

i think today the biggest winner and star should be Victoria School (along with their \"off-spring\" junior College VJC & new formalized sister Cedar)

a jump forward for SJI too... but seems they are in the background somehow... news reports seems to focus on the Victorians in CH 8 and CH U chinese news ....i havent saw the CH5 or CNA news yet...

while happy for these schools, it cast many uncertainty for Cath High, SNGS and SCGS with future IP students attending a totally unknown and yet to set up JC and like marriage of convenience .... OMG...

You an alumni of VS? you seem to be overly proud of them. also grouping them along in your BIG 4 family of schools.

VS has a loooong way to go to get into the BIG 4 as you put it. They don't even have that much prestige to boast about. ACS(i), RI, HCI, CHS, even SJI are known more in other countries.

I know prestige is an arbitrary concept, filled with human vanity. But look at it this way, VS's only advantage with SJI and CHS is affiliation with VJC. I dont see hoe VS is attaining \"BIG 4\" status.

Just giving my 2 cents worth.

my reply to CentralControl is that it seems that you are just \"The pot calling the kettle black\" ... yourself also keenly \"promoting\" SJI .... East India Company and stuff of nobles....

it is definitely not long way to be big 4 for VS or my extreme fantasy... according to Edupoll ... it is the top5 boys school in S'pore and VJC (Offspring JC created by MOE in the 80s catered for Victoria School boys with 2 points entry advantage) is already the S'pore's top 5 jc... in fact quite just behind RI and HCI (jc sections) in terms of COP

History & progress wise over the years.... RI,ACS,VS,Chinese High, Catholic High and SJI are all top boys school... VS was probably considered maybe 'on par' with RI probably just for a short while maybe in the 1950s....

Then from those times and way up to late 70s or early 80s (until SAP schools are formed), TOP english medium boys schools had \"political\" & prestige advantaged after PAP gained power over the Socialists (leaders mainly from chinese medium schools like Chinese High and Chung Cheng High).... hence more old boys of RI, ACS, SJI and VS became cabinet Ministers, Presidents, PM etc.....
go search / google under Edupoll's ranking and wiki each school's alumni if one wishes...

then SAP school came along in late 70s/80s and schools like ACS, SJI and Catholic High seems to languished away with COP getting lower in the 1980-90s (maybe burdened with affiliated Primary schools students with lower COP) .... and Victoria School maintained better COP slightly over these schoolsbut it was Chinese High and Dunman High that did the best in the 80s and 90s....behind RI...

VS remain a relatively good top school through the 80s and 90s (but behind Chinese High and RI ) with cut off point almost never changing , probably to stick to their roots of taking students mainly from the middle/lower working class - despite them having chance to up the COP as they did produced quite a number of President/SAFOS and Columbo Scholars since the 60s... over years... even when other schools had opportunity to increase COP, VS seems to just like to stick to take top 10 to 15% of each cohort

VJC did well due to starting off with the Victoria (school) brand name and with strong support and entry of VS students in the initial 1st few batches before it could established itself (imagine it calling Marine Parade JC and NOT affiliated to Victoria School in the 80s and see who wish to study there) and continuing emphasizing more on academic performance and ensuring strict and ever lowering COP... slightly unlike VS who emphasized more on sports and school spirit.

lately since maybe 2001 onwards... ACS & SJI after going independent is SLOWLY regaining its former glory and improving COP of Sec 1... Catholic High too with better emphasis on the COP of Sec 1... and other improvement jobs... i am very proud of CHS's performance too in recent years and i really salute them ! the recent 'worry school' is VS no doubt with the unhappiness over CO-ed and not having a suitable girls school to go IP with VJC...

IF without the latest IP reform : with VS now having a formalized relationship with its long time unofficial sister school Cedar and VJC, it is quite likely that ACS, SJI and Cath High will overshadow VS in future if not current already so ... even new and good govt schools like Anderson and Bukit Panjang is rather close to VS in term of COP for sec 1 and reputation.

however, with VS going IP alongside VJC and Cedar girls, it has a very good chance of maintaining and improving on its current standings... hence it is not my fantasy of VICTORIA being in the BIG 4 name (not VS) ..... , it is the combine strength of the Victorian family of schools (1st started by VS in 1876) that will help the maintain the reputation of VS and standing of VS amongst all Singaporean schools, especially competition from other Boys school who are in fact collecting INDEPENDENT SCHOOL FEES! VS is simply a Govt (fee) School....

Hi tanbh, I tend to agree with you that Victoria School is in a good position. VJC had previously been top JC in schools ranking, surpassing RJC and HCJC. Now it is 3rd best JC after RJC(RI) and HCJC (HCI).
And CGS is academically very strong.
I see the top 3 in terms of academic being:
              1. RI(JC)/RI/RGS
              2. HCI(JC)/HCI/NYGS
              3. VJC/VS/CGS

wah...the marriage of 1 boy school with two girls schools. At JC level, Cat high boys can have afford to have two girl friends.
and the new setup in PMO for population and talent, it helps. 😉

Questions here. RI and HCI only have girls in Year 5 and Year 6 but they are still known as boys’ school. ACSI has similar setup, ie only have girls in Year 5 and 6, but why is ACSI now a co-ed school?

I wonder how many girls join ACSI in Year 5. The ratio could be lop-sided. SJI will be doing a similar model as ACSI.

I've so many questions about the new JC too. Where will it be? Why not just merge with NJC which is not too far from these three schools? With a declining birthrate, should we still be building more JCs?

i wonder what are they going to call the new JC? SCCJC? CCJC? SJC?
