Let your child study overseas if you can afford it?

My question and poll is motivated in part by the news of 2 families I know who are going to relocated to another country. They are no quitters… in fact one of the families have 2 out of 2 kids in GEP. The parents are also sacrificing their careers for the move.


I suspect this may be a growing trend for informed parents who want something better for their children’s future.

Incidentally both sets of parents have studied and lived abroad. This set me thinking of our options.

Relocating to another country, its a BIG decision. For me, I won't do that purely for my kids. It has to be beneficial to all the family members. After all, when we grow old, that would be the place we are retiring in. I wouldn't sacrifice to that extend for my kids.

I feel its better when the kids grow up after working for a couple of years, and they want to further study in overseas with their hard earned money. Then they can appreciate the opportunity more.

Given a choice, I would rather my child go for an overseas education. Singapore’s education is so stressful. However, money is a problem. It costs a bomb to send a child overseas. If you give the chance to one child, you go to be able to give to your other children if they want it too.

Singapore is a very small place. Yes, there are a few universities to choose from locally... but the culture, the people, the attitude of staff and students are roughly the same, bearing the Singaporean hallmark.

If given the chance, would you let your child broaden his or her experience somewhere else?

YES if I get to go too.

Hubby & I studied overseas, felt like an extended holiday to us. Hence, this mummy would very much like to enjoy the experience again & this time lagi more fun because I don't need to study, only have to play tourist

Must have scholarship though, this mummy too poor

Same for me. If only my kids get into well established reputable universities overseas, otherwise, I think that our local universities with the addition of taking a semester or year abroad is just as good.

Both my husband and I studied and worked overseas quite a number of years. While it had been fun, exciting and interesting with doses of accelerated growing-up and independence, I also felt that I missed many good years with my parents and siblings.
