How about erasable (or friction) pen ? The ink looks like pen but can be rubbed off. Are they allowed ?

It seems that all these rules are set by certain schools only. It’s not stated in MOE website and not all schools disseminate same instructions to their students. Since Jennifer’s elder boy has used both in 2009 PSLE, I guess it is not prohibited in the exam.

          Hi all,

I am a primary school teacher and would like to provide some input on this.
We strongly discourage the use of correction tape. However, if your child does not forget to write down whatever he wants to. He must also check to see if the tape does not come off then it is all right to use it.

Thanks for your info, HaleyCopterz. How about pens? I read in moe booklet and it says ‘use ballpoint pens’. So is it a must to use ballpoint pens?

              Hi wings98,

It is not a must but you do not want your child's writing to be smudged so it is better to use a ballpoint pen. We usually encourage our students to bring at least 3 pens into the examination hall so that he or she would not feel panicked if one pen suddenly does not work.

Also bring in extra pencils and erasers. For drawings for science, always use a pencil. In case, he makes mistakes, he can simply erase it without distorting the original diagram.

Noted with thanks, HaleyCopterz. Guess I will have to get my boy to choose a ballpoint pen that he is comfortable with and start using it now. He has been using gel pen since P1 so hope he can get used to a new pen in 2 weeks time. 🙏

What would be a good way to make sure the writing is tidy then, if correction tape is discouraged?

For math, i use a small space for each attempt, and when it’s wrong, i neatly cancel WITH PENCIL. Maximises usage of space. 🙂

Lots of practice! 😉 if your child wants to cancel, just cancel once through neatly.

It should be ok to get used to it in 2 weeks 😄
