Suzuki method is very much about drilling and repetition, same thing over and over again (I suppose like Kumon). It’s good for those who need things to be repeated over and over in order to remember and register. It has, however, nothing to do with position, "brushing the keys" which I think you mean piano touch, that would be something the teacher is placing emphasis on.

          Hi,

please advise! my boy is doing YJC year 2 book 4 and i have a few questions here.

          1) Is it a norm for the teacher to introduce a new piece of music a week?
Even if the children have not master the earlier pieces ?

          2) Should i enrol him to 1 to 1 piano class if my boy concentration level
          is relatively low?

          Thanks

            Hi,

please advise! my boy is doing YJC year 2 book 4 and i have a few questions here.

            2) Should i enrol him to 1/1 piano class if my boy concentration level
            is relatively low?

I’m a working mummy and my son attends full day childcare thus has limited spare time to learn spelling, piano and also little play-time.

At the moment, his music (Yamaha-group course) teacher will introduce new song (partial) on weekly basis so i become very stressful as i need to make sure he knows his previous lessons work and to practise on the cureent piece.

During lesson, whenever the teacher introduce new song and get them to hands-on, most of the time my son couldnt make it.With this , he often feel sad and discouraged. This is part of the learning stage and we’ve to overcome it, isnt it? Or am i stressing him too much?

However, he never refuse to practise at home with my guidance. Here comes the problem, i’m not good enough to guide him. poor boy!

So shouldn’t the teacher make sure each kid knows their figuring position and understand their work before getting them to practise at home ???

My boy is alittle playful with low concentration level and this is the reason why i make him attend music class. Grading exam is not the key to me !!

            Thanks

In a group lesson, the teacher will not be able to focus on 1 kid alone as she has to handle the whole class and it is quite impossible that she can make sure that all the children can do everything properly. It will be good enough to ensure that the child can roughly follow what she is trying to deliver during lesson.

Maybe switching to 1-1 might be a better choice for your son as it might demoralise him further if he cannot follow.

                Thanks painajazzy,

just one more qtn, as Yamhama junior courses focus on training their listening skill, is it true that for those who opt for 1-1 piano lesson will be of great disadvantage in the later stage ?

Not necessary. Research has shown that for children who start music at the age of 6 and below tends to have perfect pitch.

Some pte teachers do incoperate listening in the lessons.

                    Hi puzzle,

Personally, I do not think that those who opt for 1-1 piano lessons are disadvantaged. My DD went straight for 1-1 lessons with Yamaha while her childhood friend started with YJC. Both are doing fine with their aural (listening) tests during their piano exams. My DD's paino teacher does train her on aural skills.

Just my 2 cents worth. 😄
