I was at Guardian (Bishan) trying to look for hand sanitizers to use at home (my girl is having a serious cold, was looking for something to help keep germs at bay from the rest of the family). I think this might be an effect of the swine flu. I even tried Watson's and NTUC, but there was no stock to be seen. πŸ˜„

Any particular brand you're looking for?

I read in the papers that the normal surgical masks are not effective in blocking out flu virus to the wearer. It is more useful for preventing the virus from spreading from the wearer to other people.

And this is also a reason why so many people are buying the masks but NOT using them, even when they are having normal flu or cough. They are thinking that the masks should only be used when H1N1 hits Singapore. Thus, they continue to spread influenza, regardless of variety. It's downright stupid.

It's like car headlights. Many people think headlights are just for lighting your own road in the dark; and forget that headlights are also used to warn vehicles approaching you, of your presence.

My wife has flu and my DD has been coughing. My DD has been wearing her mask as much as possible when outside; she even brought one to school today. This is to prevent her germs from spreading.

The irony is it took me a while to find those masks. People have been buying them but these hoarders don't use them.

At Lot 1 Guardian last Thursday, as usual they told me no stock. A promoter there asked me if I needed help so jokingly told her, \"Only if you have masks!\" - when she found out that I wanted it for DD, she took out 3 of her own and gave them to me. Thank you - Ms Rebecca Lee of Lot 1 Guardian.

I finally found a pack at Unity, for my wife, btw - WAtsons, Guardian, no chance of any stock lah.

I think the greatest danger of this episode is that if it turns out to be a non-event, WHO may be labelled as "the boy who cried wolf", and countries that have taken strong measures against pandemics may let down their guard and react slowly next time when another more virulent strain appears.

I think Asian countries having gone through SARS in recent years will want to be extra careful. Maybe I am kiasi but I don’t think we over-react because sometimes it is better to be safe than sorry. While Mexico’s condition appears to be "stabilising", number of cases are still on the rise globally, so we should not let our guard down.

MLR, your child is not 'advised' to go to school after your husband returns. I really hate the use of the word 'advise' which creates much unhappiness among centre and parents at times since 'advise' is not compulsory...

We had informed DS's CCC about DH's travel. The principal's stand is that if DH came back sick (flu/cold symptoms) then DS has to stay home. I told DH that if he has the symptoms, he is to go straight to hospital instead of home. Can't be too careful, especially he is travelling to affected countries (thru US to Canada).

He would be in hospital most of the time to spend last moments with his aunt. Don't know if that is a good or bad thing. Cos hospital is in high alert at the moment (which means extra, extra precaution), but its also the easiest place to catch any other viruses too. Me always think that hospital is the place where u can catch those super-bugs that are anti-biotics resistant and by the time doctors figure out what u got, u would be close to death or already dead. Me also not much faith in hospitals over there, heard and know some horrible things that can happen from friends that are in healthcare.

Some may say me paranoid, but its bcos of what i know that is giving me the worries. But now, i m more settled, knowing that many that are down with the H1N1 Flu is recovering well with anti-viral treatments. πŸ™ :xedfingers: for the best and DH come home healthy.

My father is travelling to China for a short holiday this month. I wish to get him some N95 masks for precautionary purposes. Any idea where can I get them?

Most places sold out. I managed to get some from fellow hardware company/supplier. Can try to call safety products company listed in Yellow Pages/Green Book.
