I married at 32 considered late. We were swinging singles for too long I guess. In the early years, our marriage was not so stable. We even contemplated to separate 😢 By the time we stabalised and decided to have kids, I had a miscarraige. All along we agreed to conceive naturally without going for any intervention. Our mindset is if have, ok. don't have, it's ok too. Then finally at 39, we are blessed with our precious son šŸ™ Regretfully, after doing all the Maths and the Sciences, we have not much of a choice but to stay at one lor šŸ˜ž

OT : How many of the 'old' age mom actually go for Oscar : Assessment for Risk for Fetal Anomalities? My gynae is advising me to go for it (as along as one is above 34), but I am second minded in going for it. Your opinions appreciated.

Hiya, I went straight to amnio test instead of the triple test. Bcos my sis and most of friends had abnormalities when they did the triple test and were terribly worried and ended up doing the amnio test, jus to find out actually all was normal. Cos the triple test result is in ratio, and your age is factor in, so it would affect the result.

The Oscar is done in the earlier stage 1st trimester instead of 16th week as in the case of amnio test, accuracy is 90%. It is less invasive than the amnio test where a ultrasound measurement of Nuchal Translucency (NT) at 11-13 weeks days gestation of the fetus, and your blood is drawn for screening. In the case of amnio test, the amnio fluid is drawn by inserting a thin hollow needle through the mother's abdomen into the uterus. The obstetrician will use ultrasound to guide the needle during the procedure so as not to harm the unborn child. a 4 days MC will be given after the test. Results take 3 to 4 weeks, one of the longest wait of my life.

A friend was in her 20s when she got pregnant, the triple test result was normal, the shock came when baby was delivered and pedi cfm has down syndrome. They were totally unprepared and had great difficulties coping in the early stages. The reason i went for the amnio test is to be prepared. But as phankao said, if you are not doing anything even if baby shows abnormalities, then don't do the test. The amnio test is 99.5% accurate, but theres always risk of miscarriage (0.3% - 5% in KKH). But amnio test can only detect chromosome abnormalities, not other birth defects.

I would suggest that you discuss with your hubs about it, read up about it as much as possible and share the info with hubs to make an informed decision.

          Just my views...... :celebrate:

I will be 37 when I deliver my #3 this Oct. What I can say is, comparing my energy level, this time, I feel so lethargic. When I had my #1, I was before 30, its was such a breeze.

I was pregnant with #1 at 35+, 1st trimester feeling extremely tired all the time. 2nd & 3rd trimester getting better but definitely had to take nap every afternoon (lucky thing can sleep @ work šŸ˜‰ ).

So can't imagine how it'll be like for the 2nd and 3rd pregnancy to come (still trying, not very hard though) Think i'll sleep all the time. lol

Had the happy thoughts all the time, even the carpal tunnel syndrome and legs size doubled due to water retension didn't take a toll on me and was still moving around easily (though i put on 21kg, big baby- 3.8kg). One month before due i was still invlolved in shifting - moving furnitures, pushing trolleys and carton boxes around.

Like what MLR mentioned, NT scan is non invasive. You might want to go for it first since it's at the earlier stage, consider lesser cost and pain than amnio test.

My SIL had her 1st pregnancy @ 37, was worried about Down Syndrome and abnomalities. She told gynae she'll treminate if it's abnormal, therefore go for amnio test, same for her 2nd pregnancy @ 39. We both see the same gynae but I'm only advised to go for NT scan as i've higher miscarriage risk as was on hormone jab during 1st trimester. (had a m/c 2 years ago). I would have gone for the amnio if NT/blood test show negative signs.

SIL excercises alot so her body's stronger. She still played badminton while pregnant. I don't exercise that's why suffered more.

                Sorry for the late reply!

Well, did you have any problems with your pregnancy and postnatal experience? For me, I felt quite tired, and also find it difficult to regain my pre-pregnancy figure. Still wearing maternity clothes now, 2.5 years after delivery! 😢

That's because before this, I was wearing petite sizes. Now am somewhere between M and L. As SAMH, have to save money lah, so haven't bought any new clothes. Still have maternity clothes what. šŸ˜‰

Yes, I do have financial worries given my age and that I am SAMH. So I plan to put my boy in childcare soon, and return to work, maybe by the end of this year. Will look for part-time work first, as I will put him in half-day first.

Which primary school is your son in?

                Cheers

Thankfully, I had a very pleasant and smooth pregnancy. Only had nausea occassionally. I added 20kg to my petite pre-pregnant weight of 45kg! So that's why after giving birth thru C section, (low placenta) I was determined to lose those weight by taking care of baby and moving around as much as I could. Sling my son to playgroup by BMW (Bus, MRT or Walk), Walk the dogs, swim. Also, rather than to spend money to try new clothes and be sad coz couldn't fit, I motivate myself to fit back into some of my old clothes and save and buy other things, like shoes šŸ™‚

But now my size cannot compare to last time lah - still flabby at the tummy and arms/thighs for sure! My son likes to jiggle jiggle my spare tires! keke!

No worries lah pea! you are still much younger than me! At 2.5 yrs, your child is still pretty much enjoyable! I feel stress only started when preparing for P1 and then formal education throughout. Honestly, I find myself aged a lot (grey hair) esp during the last 1.5 yrs!) It's a pity I found this forum only last Jul .. Even then, I wasn't regular. It was only this year that I had more time and find myself visiting this site more frequently as a platform to ask or to share info. With all the tips, sharing and support you can get from here, it really helps to know that you are not alone. We learn from each other ok? Jia you!
                  Cheers

                        pea:
I delivered at 38. Do I take the cake?

                        Cons :
                        1. Panting to keep up with active toddler.

                        2. Grandparents hitting 70, too old to help me look after kid.
I have similar cons with pea. In fact, my triplets arrived after my parents-in-law passed away. So sorry to let them wait until neck-long-long. As for my parents, instead of excitement, they nearly fainted because adding mine in, they have a dozen grandchildren. They always think when they can ROD bec they have been 'activated' whenever childcare closed for the last 19 years! Yes, their eldest child daughter is 19 years old.

Btw, I married at 28 and hasn't been successfully conceived until 36 when I tried IVF for the 1st time.

Luckily, I am ok during pregnacy. No morning sickness, no cravings (lucky for my hubby), no high blood pressure, etc. My triplet health are also ok except a bit small. After my cesarean, I hopped off the bed 28 hours later to NICU to visit my babies and discharged from hospital 72 hours to be home to prep for my babies discharge.

So, agree with MLR that pregnacy complication may not necesary related to age after all. Or I am just lucky as my mom believe it is I have my MIL's blessing.

Btw, I am 41 now. I just got news from my ex-classmate, same age. She is pregnant with her 3rd child! I almost can't believe it! She is our batch's guiness record! Her no 1 is the oldest child among our batch and now her 3rd one will be the youngest. Reason? She delivers one child in every 7 years!!!! I think she can share all her diff experience on being a mom at 27, 34 and 41!
