      Hi E3/Trapwithin,

Fighting the SA2 fire is very stressful. I started revising with my son in August. Rest is equally impt, as well as drinking more fluids.

In Pei Hwa, the kids’ results between the 1st and 2nd are very very close…very competitive. I really pity the kids in the top class…having to fight to stay at the peak.

        Trapwithin:

So 285/300 = 95% to get into CH2. Very competitive indeed.
The standard changes yearly so don't use it as a guage. There's no hard and fast rule. I heard from a friend that her daughter's classmate decided to forgo her chance to be in Charity 2 last year and went to Faith 2 instead. The most important thing is just get your kids to work hard, try their best and everything will come into place naturally.

          E3:

I don't mean to scare you. I know the percentage diff is miniscule, 0.1%. There are 31 pupils in Charity 2 this year. Based on my broad computation, the last position should be at least 95% last year.

It is a competitive class. Besides the usual few who are rather secure at the top, you will still hear different names springing up during mock tests for doing well. Almost everyone has the potential (I said potential cos like you said, many still make careless mistakes) to get full marks for their strong subjects, not just scoring above 95.

The kids in top ten for P1 last year are different from the top ten for SA1 this year. Like what markfch has mentioned, the changes are great in the lower primary cos many who excelled later can easily take over those at the tops. It's anyone's game at the end of the day.

So 285/300 = 95% to get into CH2. Very competitive indeed.
So it would be like 295-300 --> top 10
          290-300 --> top 20
          285-300 ---> top 30

          Poor kids .... Sigh ...

What is the top score last yr ... 300?

I am not surprised at the \"musical chair changes\" in top ten.
          Marks are just too close.

In business .. people always say .. \"Chiam Tan\" every cents of profit counts.
Now in school .. it is \"Hun Tan\" every marks count ..

during my son's yr, 280/300 could only get into Gr2.

Ya. We had this discussion in the past pages, your ds's year is a very strong cohort.

:!: My eyes pop a few times today.
280/300 is very very good result.
Must re-align expectation and goals 😉

BTW, does the school reveals the cut-off for each class, or it depends on parent's resourcefulness

Totally agree. In fact, they should sleep a bit more during this period to keep thier mind in top form. For kids in morning session, do consider to let them have a short afternoon nap

Sometimes .. it is the kid themselves that wanted to stay in the top few classes even when parents are willing to take a back seat. Among the kids, they talked about who and who is in what classes as well.

So .. it is poor parents as well :imdrowning:

However, I do know that for P4/5 kids who fell short of the GEP selection but had done well in the rounds would be given GEP-like programmes after curriculum time.

My elder boy missed out on this Centre of Excellence programme although he went for GEP round 2. He was put in JOY4 when he was transferred to PH despite his good grades in the previous sch, distinctions in New South Wales test and passing GEP round 1. His MA teacher called me up n said she had requested for him to join the programme and was waiting for the VP to approve. In the end, the approval did not materialise. Being new to the school then, I had no idea abt this programme. Till today, I have no idea why we were not told beforehand of this programme and why approval was not given. I could only guess that not all pupils who passed round 1 have the chance to get into the programme. Likely to be some other criteria.

What I do know is better teachers are allocated to the top few and weaker teachers...something like to maintain the top end and boost the weaker ones.

The reality of limited number of good teachers. Those classes in between kena the most.

Then my ds no chance for top 3 classes liao, cos he makes tons of careless mistakes/take short cuts answering qns when not supervised. Still the happy-go-lucky kind.

You still have chance. For your DS, P1 has not even started yet.
Practice made perfect .. so practice more 😄

Haha, you don't know my son. To date he can still start a sentence with small caps and give one word ans to open ended qns when unsupervised. And if I reprimand him, he'll retort 'if you so clever, you do it yourself.'

Of course every parent would want their kids to go to the best class, but if the std of the top 3 classes is so high, perhaps I should be more realistic and lower my expectation a bit. Just try my best and accept the outcome.

The standard of the cohort can be quite subjective. My dd’s class had the opportunity to try out 2008 and 2009 P2 SA2 Math exam papers. From my analysis of the questions, 2008 paper was more challenging. So, if the cohort for that year did not do as well, does that mean they are weaker? For parents with kids doing that Math paper, and not scoring well, does that imply that their kids are weak in Math? On the other hand, 2009 paper was easier and many kids could possibly do well, will it also result in parents getting complacent?

I believe the overall scores for the P2s for these two years will vary. Let’s just take the cut-off marks for each class with a pinch of salt.

A couple of months back, a discussion was made that half the p5 cohort flunk SA1 Math, does that mean the cohort is weak or the exam was too tough?

Thus, I believe in building a strong basic foundation, especially in the lower primary, and be ready and equipped before every exam, so as to cushion the shock of an extremely tough paper. It’s better than to swallow a bitter pill.
