Chinese impt in secondary level?
-
Yes they have
-
I wld advise to continue CL tuition for sec sch if the child had needed the extra coaching to maintain his grades in pri sch. The difficulty level is much higher.
-
HI Jennifer and all
thks for the advice.
what is the impact if he does not do well in chinese? also, i am hoping he can get into the IP programme. If he does get into the programme, does it mean that we can "relax" a little bit on chinese?
dh’s view is that we shouldn’t focus so much on chinese in sec school, so he is not really for the idea of continuing the enrichment class.

Every darn subject is important. It's all about balancing. I think one should go with the flow. If your kid is weak in Chinese, let him concentrate in English. English is still the most important in the many more years to come unless you want to work in China. The world is so big and China is not the whole world. I think there is too much hype in Singapore about Chinese learning. If you are good, that's good for you, if not why force it.
Chinese is important and will continue to be important for a few more generations. If someone like Jim Roger sent his DD to NYPS to learn Chinese, it already tells you something. Sadly, many KSPs here don't see that. Many of them find ways and means to \"escape\".octopusmum:
HI all
would like to know if Chinese is an impt subject in sec level?
not sure if i should continue sending ds to chinese class in berries when he starts sec 1 next year...
tks
Now back to the question.every subject is important in sec. They carry equal weightage.
We have a family friend who flung his Chinese in schools. Now he works in China and is so good in the language. Language learning can be quite circumstantial. If you are forced into the environment due to work next time, you pick it up really fast. Faster than what PSLE or 'o' level can do for you. Because the need is there, the motivation is there.
The point is, why force because of all these fear. We don't even know where our kid will work or what he'll do next time. The future is never certain, why are parents so certain that Chinese is so important that they have to get so stressed up about it on their kid now. Relax, be present with yourself and your kid. The future is never certain.
What's important is for one to follow his interest and pursue it with passion. If you are passionate in a thing, the world will have a place for you. -

China is not the whole world but it may become the centre of the world soon. See China is growing at 10% per year, in less than years, it will be double of Japan. See also how USA is in a mess, their debt alone will takes generations to clear up even if they do the right thing now.
The world is so big and China is not the whole world. I think there is too much hype in Singapore about Chinese learning. -
If he needs help in the subject, you may want to continue with the ch enrichment class. However, i heard that Berries is not very good at sec level. You may want to source around. I have friends whose kids are in the IP program and they still send them for Ch tuition etc. If you don’t do well, it will affect your overall results. Just my thoughts.

As a parent we should let the child know that every subject is important from young, if the parent have a negative mindset
,
likewise the child. -

Do you know where Sec students who are taking Higher Chinese get tuition?
Can you recommend a tuition centre please? -
gladtobemom,
Go to the nearest Hans Language Centre. -
octopusmum,
You know your ds situation best. If he needs to spend an inordinate amount of time for HMT at the expense of other subjects, then drop to express level. In the calculation of L1R5, chinese is regarded as one of the optional subjects. However, take note that he needs to take H1 chinese at JC-1 level or IB chinese under grp 2 language at standard level as part of uni entrance requirement.
Though chinese is not as critical as in PSLE, it provides a student with a distinct advangtage especially at IB. A student strong in chinese can take it at higher level and score max 7 rank points. A fair number of mainland chinese do that at ACSI every year. For JC, one is exempted from the language if he meets the min grade of D7 HCL.
