is it possible to make it without tuition

I see your point. At this rate of stiff competition, parents have to live a 100 years at least. *sigh* I pray for my health.
I had the same thought when my eldest kid finished JC. However, only got to realise how competitive it is nowadays. There are easily over 600 pupils with perfect scores at A level. Countless with 4As 1B. For local favourites such as med faculty or law, they are taking only 260 and 200 per intake. How to squeeze in is a real art. Those kids with coaching definitely have an advantage. Kids, left on their own, must be really mature to make it on their own. Unfortunately, mind was not that mature in thoughts - only can studyksi:
Hmm...current day kids have it easy for parents to coach. During our time, we find out everything and coach ourselves to gain admission. By uni, I hope I can let go and let her fend for herself. If not, if she does not work in a good company, she may think I do not coach her for the interview. Just my 2 cents on when I will let go....
For good overseas uni, it is even worse - good write-up and interview play a critical part in getting in (not results) -
that’s great. thanks a lot!

How can news reports be \"not very appropriate for kids\"?
Try to exclude the newpaper - the news reports are not very appropriate for kids.lauren:
wow. so gd. i realised even in the same sch, it depends on which teacher ur child get. some teachers are lousy even if in a top sch
i thot just get them read the straits times or new paper can already -
Erm…after reading all the posts, I am still confused. So without tuition can or cannot make it for PSLE.
Maybe should be more specific on the term ‘make it’. What about can those parents who have gone thru the PSLE experience share if without tuitions can score 250 and above? -
Or can the parents who had gone thru the no tuition path share the PSLE score of their kids? That may just encourage parents who intend to coach their kids themselves and save on tuition fees and time.

some children needs supervision, instructions and guidance or even companion to study /do homework,
some are able to study on their own with minimum supervision
think their mummies (or maybe daddies) know them best -

At the end of the day I would say it depends on your child's capabilities. From primary one I refuse to have tuition for my ds wanting to coach him myself. He did ok scoring well in lower primary. But towards the middle part of p5 his marks went south and i didn't know if i was teaching him right. so at p6 i was not taking chances and had a cousin (who was a tutor before) to help him with maths and mt for the whole of p6. He scored his 1st A* ever at p6. 2 months before psle, i became even more frantic and hunted for a tutor to help with section B of science as I didn't know how to explain in that area. She made him practise assessement papers upon papers. My ds scored well for his psle gaining 3 A* for the first time in the subjects. It is really not to brag but my point now is had I not seek help, knowing my limitations, my son would perhaps have been shortchanged as, obviously, he was capable of a bit more. Now at sec 1 i stopped all his tuition (except maths - i'm clueless) to try to let him be more independent and learn on his own. So far he has been able to cope with the new subjects too. I can't really teach him anymore, just supervise and check his work and make sure all is done. I monitor all the time. But I can say this now, come sec 3 and 4 i will probably take out my kiasu hat and get him tutors for subjects he can probably score more in!
...sorry for the lonnnnggg story. just want to share... -

I would use the child's results against the sch avg as a benchmark. If the results are falling behind this benchmark, then tuition might be helpful. JMHOErm...after reading all the posts, I am still confused. So without tuition can or cannot make it for PSLE.

Or international assessment such as ICAS to benchmark against the entire cohort in the same year throughout Singapore. Although I heard not every school participated in ICAS
