Funx3:
I can't represent most parents cos I've never read a chinese storybook outside of sch's text in my life. My apathy in chinese has come to haunt me.
Did Not Realise P1 HCL Std So High Now ....
Even Parents Cannot Read All the Words!
If you can imagine that my chinese can improve by leaps & bounds after reading kindy storybooks with ds, then you know how low my level is.
At the pits, the only way is up  -

don't worry, markfch...my dd couldn't utter a single word when she was in K1 and now she is coping very well in her HCL.....my feeling was like you before....furthermore, your ds is having lesson at Berries, no problem la....with the exposure the kids have in PH, they can pick up very fast one...
I knew the books are coming in today. So there was much anticipation.Mrsbongz:
Oh dear.. my DH was asking me to stop reading this forum bcos all these posts are making me break out in cold sweat  I barely passed my o level chinese!! My fren who is a chinese teacher was assuring me that if I can keep pace with his studies, I should be able to cope sufficiently to help him in his work. Guess this mommy better start reading more chinese books
Can anyone recommend me a good assessment book for P1 chinese? I prefer those exercises that build up step by step, like the peter & Jane series kinda style. So that it helps DS1 to build up his confidence for the subject. aiyah.. since I'm asking, any good recommendations for other subjects are also welcomed!! TIA!!
But after browsing thru the HCL text, in place of anticipation now there is only trepidation  -
Mrsbongz:
Better than me. I did not study Chinese. I just managed to cope with P1 HCL. But after P1, it was too much and I had to outsource...

Yeah right, don't worry too much. All this is just a nightmare. Tomorrow when I wake up there'll be another set of textbooks being delivered that is so much more like my cup of tea :rotflmao:

The Learners publisher HCL books are also very good. Comes complete with oral, listening, short story writing for P1 book, picture compo for P2 book and other exercises like 词语搭配 and comprehension. P1 book (2007) is by 梁敏 and P2 book (2008) is by 陈岩.

You can also consider the SAP publishers (seahorse logo), comes in book 1a and 1b, likewise for p2. -

Hopefully so. For Berries next year, ds is placed in the HCL P1 class so should be able to supplement what is taught in PH rite?
Not that bad if your ds goes to Berries. Come P1 Berries will catch up too just go thru the Berries lesson notes with your ds consistently and he will be fine. -
markfch:
It should be fine. My dd is in Tien Hsia and she is doing great in HCL because Tien Hsia follows the MOE syllabus very closely and she was drilled through the examination questions week after week till my dd complained that it was too boring. I put a gamble next year in moving her to Berries for P2. Hopefully it will work as well or even better for her. If not I will have to move her back to Tien Hsia.

My son’s CL exam was a surprise…it was just 1 hour and son told me many sections were taken out like 汉语拼音,完成对华…his 2 weak areas.
Hi Mrsbongz,
You can consider getting ‘Higher Chinese Intensive Exercises’ written by 韦渊. Victoria Publications. There is also ‘Score in Higher Chinese’ by EPH publication.
