about tuition for kids with high marks / band 1
remember this conversation with a teacher before : the question is why not able to achieve a break through over and above the high marks of 80 - 90......so in came the tutors who focus not only on content but to seriously understand what the questions are asking for, having knowledge may not have answered to the point with the right technical answer....and this kind of coaching to have is worth paying....I guess that is why parents are willing to pay
sorry to say that because PSLE is a placement exam, we all want our kids to be placed ahead of others.....so, 80 - 90 is not good enough if the child has the capacity to go beyond that, say consistently above 95 will be good, nearly full marks will be good, be able to make only a few careless mistakes on the top schools' exam papers will be good...
in so doing, the child learns what is excellency over and above what is very good (I know some parents will disagree with this) - to be balanced with humility, quest for knowledge, put in best effort in every task, and the children can be challenged by the parents and teachers to go beyond what the child think originally impossible
Firstly, high ability kids are not in tuition but enrichment and they don't need multiple but just one good one to keep them stretched and stimulated.
Secondly, sorry to say this, but the words in bold is the perception some commercial teachers want to create. It is all about understanding the marking scheme only. I have managed to coach my kid to get full marks in those areas after I figure out the marking scheme. As for understanding what the question wants, if it is written in clear English and not ambiguous, nothing so difficult to understand. I really hate those low quality questions being posed and positioned as tricky questions for the children, undermining their intelligence. And if an exam question is not written to be understood easily, it is questionable what is the objective? They should be tested for deriving the answer and not having to spend alot of time interpreting the unclear question. We are talking about supposedly high ability kids here trying to move a good grade to a better one.
In search of excellence is beyond exam. In fact exam is the worst method to make one go in search of excellence. The kind of exams we have now actually cripple many things in the learning process but can score A*. Nothing wrong with your Engrish...you are just being sold by what that teacher told you.

Reason is simple, the kid needs to maintain the position. There's stiff competition out there. Ony by engaging a top tutor, the parents can ensure that the kid, who is already very bright, knows that he or she can get even better and needs to get better to maitain the good school position. A top tutor knows how to keep the kid constantly motivated too. I set very high standards so none of my kids can ever feel complacent. The fact is, they still have so much to learn. They do not know everything under the sun yet. Neither do us.

Just my views :
1. If a child through tuition improves from B to A*, the child actually doesn’t need tutor. He/she is very self-motivated. Proper exposure to the exam method would do the trick.
2. If a normal child through tuition improves from FAIL to A, that guy is a damn good tutor. It is not his knowledge on the subject. It is his/her ability to motivate the child.
3. If a child who is slow, through tuition improves from FAIL to C, that guy is damn patient and observant. It is his discerning power to understand the child’s shortcoming and skill to overcome them.
Most top class tuition falls under cat (1). Cat (2) & (3) are usually cheap but very hard to find - because to this small group, teaching is a passion, not a job. -

If a bright child needs to sustain top 3 positions by 1-1 tuition of $100/hr, then you better be ready to tutor them in uni and in their job in future. This is artificially sustaining the positions. But then again, I understand because everyone is doing it, the kiasu mentality will be worried not to do it, this is what tutors are counting on. Personally I would rather find out my child is truly bright or not by letting go of 1-1 tuition otherwise I cripple my child for life.
And I am right, the 3rd vote is a tutor.

Personally, I was also being tutored when i was younger. I was from the Chinese High track and field team and I neglected my studies when i was in sec 3. So did my cousin who was in RI. So we got his senior to have crash course for us. We're bright students ourselves but we still learnt a lot from his senior as he's a President scholar.WS1234567:

My point is, some of us who r tutors have skills that u can never imagine. These top 3 students need me for the thinking skills i infuse in them that they won;t get from others. No one is born with such high level of thinking skills if they're not taught by someone else.
Perhaps some pple do not have a clue abt the skills i am talking about.
U need to engage a top tutor to experience it yourself.
I'm not handicapping my students. I'm empowering them in fact. But they need to be expose to the skills in the first place. -
A tutor is there is guide the child. My son has tuition for CL bcos we speak English at home, and don’t know how to coach him for Compo/Oral. Other than that one-a-week lesson, I will coach him in other areas of CL.
If the child needs 1-to-1 tuition of $100/hr, then that spells trouble. How long in life is it possible to have such ‘artificial sustaining’ ? -
Totally not convince of the need for high ability pupils to engage super tutors 1-1. Here, we are taking about pupils able to score A* in PSLE.
The kind of learning skills imparted by super tutors 1-1 is not limited and can be acquired thru self discovery with the guidance of parents, top sch teachers, enrichment classes in top centres, mind champs, Adam Khoo learning, and several others centers. Above all these, always ask kids to pray for wisdom, speak out and confess it-this is the best method.
My son, an ordinary art student, never hve the prviledge of 1-1 tuition. Hesat for difficult challenging PSLE maths papers yr 2005. Many parents complained of two questions(section C) amounting to 10 marks were of high diificulty and not commonly thought in schs, tuition centres and assessment bks. He answered both questions correctly and still hve 30 mins for checking.
Obviously, my family has adopted the prayer method. Since then, for both my kids only believe the prayer is the best method. -

Nothing wrong with your Engrish...you are just being sold by what that teacher told you.
we have discussions with the school teachers (not tuition teacher) during the feedback / meet the parent sessions. we as parents were told which is the area of weakness in certain specific topics in each subject, why seemingly the effort by the kid did not get the requisite return in terms of marks.....and the analysis boils down to techniques. we are talking about breaking through from low 90s to high 90s, so it is about the last few marks - diminishing return as some would put it. but the challenge is not to lose any marks. so after the discussions with the school teachers, we told the tuition teacher or enrichment teacher to pay more attention in specific area - very targeted. breakthrough achieved.
