Police are stepping up enforcement on gang-related activities after vicious attacks in Pasir Ris and Bukit Panjang left one teen dead and several others injured.

Teenage girl arrested for loanshark harassment
SINGAPORE : Police have arrested an 18—year—old girl, believed to be involved in loanshark harassment.
Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division arrested her on Saturday morning after follow—up investigations.
They found in her possession items including a mobile phone, believed to contain debtors’ records, as well as markers and bottles of paint.
The teenager is allegedly involved in several harassment cases where the front doors of debtors’ units were set on fire.
She will be charged in court on Monday.

THE Government will be studying how police powers can be enhanced to prevent at-risk youth from forming or getting involved in gangs.
The aim is to allow the authorities to intervene early, and be armed with more tools to deal with young people who need help in disassociating with gangs but have yet to commit criminal offences.
Announcing this yesterday, Minister of State for Home Affairs and Education Masagos Zulkifli, who is heading the review, said that sentencing options also need to be relooked.
‘We need to look at sentencing options, the relevance of police powers that are already existing today, and whether these should be modified to better address the issues in the mid to long term,’ he said at a press briefing at the police headquarters in New Phoenix Park.
‘In the course of doing so, we may need to review the existing laws so that the police as well as all other institutions are aligned in bringing the situation to one that our community will be happy with.’
