Where to go to for good guitar lessons?
-
Thanks for the detailed post. Now this dumbo knows a bit more.
Some more advice please
DS is very interested, so had enrolled him in a CC nearby. Teaching is not professional, but is nearby so precious weekend time saved.
Ds is 6 and he has been going for 3 mths now. My idea was to send him here for 6-12 mths. and see if he is still interested then to put him in a proper class.
Now i worry thta if he is not being taught properly/systematically then would that lead to a problem of "unlearning"?
Should i stop being so stingy and lazy and get him to a more professional place? -
Hi Sun_2010,
Every parent dreams of their child attaining success, and one of the most popular area besides academics is in music. And the younger you start, the better.
First thing, it's good thing your DS expressed interest in learning to play the guitar, that way he can't say he was coerced into it, like most of us who had learnt the piano (or musical instrument of parents' choice) at a young age
Are his lessons at the CC for children or beginners in general? Has he learnt what is being taught, and how to understand and apply it?
If you feel that \"formal\" lessons are better, he can shift to a regular music school if he knows a little bit about the basics. It will give him ample opportunity to show what he has learned thus far, and somehow be ahead of the rest of class β which can be a great confidence booster.
Guitar lessons for children must be geared for the young minds. You are right, it would be a shame to let it all his learning go down the drain because of a poorly constructed course. -
Thanks Duriz,
I did put DD in Piano at Yamaha when she was too young , and effectively swished off any interest she had in it. So with DS I am wiser.
It is for beginners . Its been 3 months and he is still showing interest, pulling me to sit for practice with him  . The thing is i dont know much abt guitars so dont know how much he has learnt.
I will take ur advise and put him into a more formal class starting next year after our vacation in Dec. -
I headed to Cristofori yesterday to check on the avail classesβ¦and the details abt the charges are stated below:
Beginner Individual Guitar (8 yrs and abv)
$208.65/term (3 months)
Once a week
30 mins/lesson
Beginner Group Guitar (8yrs and abv)
7 to 8 in a group
$176.55/term (3 months)
Once a week
1 hr/lesson
The abv exclude registration fee $21.40 and material fee. Kids will have to buy their own guitar for lessons.
The school only offers classical guitar.
dd wanted to join the individual class but I find that the timing is abit too short - 30 min. I wouldnβt wanna spend 20 min find parking lot in the carpark, just to send her for a 30 min lesson. I am persuading her to join the group lessonsβ¦most importantly, I have to make sure she can sustain her interest.
Anyone knows abt the yamaha fee? -
was reading this post with some interest .. used to be a guitar teacher during my time in university coaching little kids (from 3yrs old!) in their homes how to play the guitar.. we would have those little chord sheets with cartoon characters showing where the little fingers had to go and all...and had a structured program (3-6mth) based on what the child wanted to learn ..anyway -
depending on what the parent is looking for/ or the child is interested in, most times the guitar courses by established music companies specialise in classical guitar .. i,e they will teach you the notes, each string.. eventually you learn to 'pluck out' a classical tune.. which is wonderful from a foundational point of view- but may not be what a child is hoping for. really depends on what the parent/child wants. usually leds on to some guitar exam/certification of sorts.
like for taylor swift/jonas brothers kind of songs -the pop types -they will definitely not be covering it! - btw .. Taylor is probably using an accoustic guitar as most pop idols do.
my humble suggestion to keep up the interest of the kids - sign them up for some holiday guitar pop courses - where they learn simple chords/strum and play simple songs - and give them the chords to figure and play and have fun.. lots more learning on the child's part - and saves you a lot of time going down to the centres every week.
you could also search the newspapers for guitar teachers who can come by your house to teach - that is if your kid keeps up the interest, i think their rates are like $20-40 per 1 1/2 lesson? Not sure what is it now..
have fun
