He is now in RI. He has offered from NJC and Dunman High. The first test he went was with HCI and he did not get any offer. He has the HCI result before he went for the test with RI. His GAT test which was taken in HCI was excellent. we have given out hopes when he received a call from RI for the Mathematic selection test. He went thru it and get the offer from RI. We are all surprise too. My son maths' result is above 95% from P4 to P6. He has an average of 85% for his P4 to P6 exams. He is not the top 10 students in his primary school.
Yes, I am curious to know more too. My son from mainstream had a bronze but did not get pas the first round during the DSA. He got in via his PSLE results. Overall we felt the mainstream pupils seem to be disadvantaged in the DSA exercise.wiimum:

Wow - which school is that? Did he do very well in the Entry tests or Interview instead? You mean he did not have any math olympiad tests at all?
I hope this can motivate the parents to try DSA if your child is consistent with their results. Do not get worry if your kids do not have any awards. Good luck and do let me know if you need any help.[/quote]From what I learnt, they first look at GAT score and academic (must be at least 85% for RI) then they look at what other speciality the child has. Unlike HCI they state there clearly the must for at least a sliver in Maths Olympiad if you are from mainstream or otherwise a sport talent of their list of games(selection trial needed), else it falls onto phase 2. Already, there are so many SMOPS winners on waiting list. You will need extremely good result to just get yourself in waiting list in phase 2. -

Your son must have performed very well for his Maths selection test. Which primary school was he from? Is your son in RI's Maths Club? Since he was admitted through his Maths Talent, is he required to participate in Maths Competitions? How did he perform in his S1 Maths Tests so far? -

Yes, I beleive that parents should allow their kids to attempt DSA if they are keen on a school and kid had show consistently good results in one or more subjects. They need not be in the top in school or have won Olympic awards.

DSA results do turn out surprises with some good but not top and non olympic award students being admitted. It is also true that some top in school and silver award winners do not get any place at all in DSA.
Do not think that students with PSLE score below the school cut off of 260+ will not do well in these schools. Many of those admitted thru DSA have abilities not reflected thru PSLE scores or Olympic awards and can compete with the high PSLE scorers. -

Min 80% applies only to GEP students. They are exempted from GAT if their average is more than 80%

By the way, what is the total GAT score upon? What is a good GAT score? -
phankao:
The GAT score was never revealed to candidates. The 80% mentioned in RI's website refers to GEP student's exam scores administered by MOE for all GEP students, not GAT.

He is not obligated to join the Maths club. His maths in S1 was above average in the 60% percentile. Term 1 was a bit of culture shock for him. But he is getting use to life of RI. His results is improving day by day. As long as we did not get the pink slip from the school, we know he is doing alright. I have ask him a few times about whether he regretted choosing RI. His answers have been very consistence. He love the life and enjoys every moment in the school.
I think motivation is an important factor. Bring your kids to the open house and they will be motivated by the events and history of the school. -

Hi kiasuson,
On behalf of my aunt who has a mainstream son taking PSLE this year, do you know the intake of RI boys based on PSLE S1 posting? She heard from last Saturday’s RI open house that usually for Sec 1, there are 6 ‘GEP’ classes, 1 ‘Sports’ class and 8 mainstream classes every year.If half of the mainstream classes are taken by DSA, then basically 4 mainstream classes are left for PSLE S1 posting. Is this correct and how many students are there in a single mainstream class?
Thanks.
