Can’t Malay be the second language, rather than Tamil, Hindi or Mandarin? Far more useful I believe.

Anyone here is taking Hindi as their mother tongue subject? I would like to know how you help your kid in improving vocabulary?

            Thanks…

              Hi

My daughter has taken Hindi as MT and it is taught in her school as private tuition. However key to improving vocabulary is to talk to yr child in Hindi as much as possible . Also if possible buy simple hindi story books to read . Grammar and vocabulary is pretty hard given teh fact that kids don’t use it in daily life and are not exposed to those words .Just keep trying to speak and reading to them , it will surely help

                Hello,

My son is also doing Hindi as MT in school. Will be in P2 next year. We do not speak Hindi at home. So it has been a challenge.

I have been asking him to read simple story books (1 page stories), highlight the words that are unfamiliar. We both then refer to the dictionary - Sabdhkosh online is a great resource, and Rajpal Hindi dictionaries (recommended by DAV) : Hindi-Hindi, English-Hindi.

I am also trying to source some fun comics for him to read. I hear youtube is a good resource but have not spent much time to look for stuff.

                Do share your experiences.

                Cheers!

Thanks a lot for the advice. We are also not from hindi speaking region and do not speak the same at home.

May I know from where you get the simple story books? I have tried making my DD read ‘Chandamama’ stories from website, but seems like most of the words there are too difficult for her to understand (she is going to P1 in 2011).

                  Regards

                    Hi,

My kids (P2) also take Hindi as MT. They go to the centre on saturdays. Since we also do not speak Hindi at home, it’s a huge challenge to get them to learn the language.

Lets discuss how we can help our children learn the language here, if you have online resources, please do share them here…

I've just enrolled my daughter for Hindi as MT, she starts P1 next week. I've been coaching her at home. I would say the best way to learn is to watch movies with English subtitles. Of course, if you speak the language at home, even better 😄

One of my friends recommended this site to get practice worksheets. If you are interested have a look -

                        http://practicehindi.com/

Haven't tried out the worksheets - mainly as it is quite expensive... 😄

If anyone in the forum has tried out.. pls do let us know about the same.
