Hi all

DS was referred to Refraction Clinic at Geylang Polyclinic earlier this year during the yearly check by Health Promotion Board in his child care centre. He is in K2 this year. The check diagnosed him as mildly short sighted and hence, I further brought him to an optical shop where glasses were prescribed only if he is doing near work.

Am I right that there is a need to do a review every 3 or 6 months to check if the myopia has deteriorated? Where can I bring him to for a review? I am hoping to try elsewhere other than the optical shop we went to as somehow, the reading taken at the shop was alot higher than the Refraction Clinic. I am not sure if its because his myopia is really bad or it has got to do with taking readings at different times of the day.

DS is quite active, I did bring him to another optical shop to do reading last month and he was quite restless till the staff suggested I bring him to a pediatric eye clinic instead for more accurate reading.

Not too sure where can I bring him to now? Can anyone advise?

      Thanks!

Hi, i was told that for children less than 8 years is better to see a eye doctor. For your case, what is the recent prescription as compared to earlier this year? i think it will not be accurate given that your DS was restless.

Hi Barney8, the recent prescription was definitely incorrect. That's why I am trying to find another place to review his myopia reading. I called a few places like SNEC and KK Eye Center, consultation alone is at least $70 and above?

      Anyone heard about iGard?
Anyone try Ortho-K

with Mee Mee Optics? Can share your feedback please?

I am staying in the west and check this forum for the recommended Ortho-k providers, looks like they are the only one nearby.

        thanks

No sorry but my brother's friend went to one at clifford centre and they were happy with it. He's considering going to this same doc. It's a pretty central location so you may want to consider.

We are using Mee Mee Optics, and we are happy with it.
Which Optometrist do you see for the ortho-K program? Is it David Chong?

The cheapest way to see a doctor in KKH is to get a referral fm Polyclinic doctor. I believe the SGD70 that you mentioned is for direct walk-in to KKH.

My dd has been on Ortho K since Aug’10 & I’m very pleased with the results so far. To be honest, every single eyecare "solution" has got it’s side effects. I decided again Atr-drops coz I do not want my dd to develop cataracts in adulthood thru UV overexposure!

Ortho K is non-invasive & the highest risk stems fm eye infection caused by improper lens cleaning. I circumvented this potential risk by cleaning her lens myself. How can a 10 yo possibly do a good job cleaning these hard lens every morning? Now my dd is even more beautiful w/o her glasses & it’s been a great confidence booster whenever she receives a compliment. Her myopia was 650 deg on each eye previously. If her myopia had crept up any further, she would not have been suitable for this Ortho-K lens program.

At night, I put on her lens after she brushes her teeth, just before she goes to bed. In the morning, I remove it before she washes up & follow a strict regime in cleansing & storing the lens. All it takes is 5 mins. & she has perfect vision for the entire day.

And btw, my dd is a Type 1 Diabetic patient & I’ve consulted her KKH Endocrinologist with a whole host of Ortho-K lens info to ensure that it will not affect her diabetic condition. He reviewed & gave his thumbs-up to proceed with the Ortho-K lens & assured me that it won’t affect her retina.

Now she no longer squints nor have to clean her foggy glasses whenever she gets out of the car. It’s not just myopia control, it’s a whole life-style change. I think it’s absolutely worth it all…

              Hi
According to the opticians I met, children under 7 yrs old have to be seen by a specialist. Its supposed to be the govt rule. After making many calls, I was told to make an appointment with the School Health Service Tel : 64353895 at SGH http://www.hpb.gov.sg/studenthealth/default.aspx. My dd had a review (I made new appt) about 4 mths later as I felt that her eyesight had worsened.

Personally, I feel that for pre-school school kids, might be a good idea to bring them to an eye doctor for their eye check-ups instead of going to the optometrist first. You can visit the eye doctors recommended by HPB. Alternatively, u can also go to the Eye Clinic at KK Hosp.

The optometrists are not medically trained so where eyes are concerned, better to bring the child to an eye doctor/specialist for better advice.

dd has been on atropine eye-drop for 4 years. Her myopia is effectively under control but I also worry about whether there is any long-term effects. Her doctor doesn’t seem to think so. The degree may also shoot up if she stops the eye drop.

Anybody has children who has been on atropine for more than 4 years?

Eye doc also get the optometrist to check then use the result for consultation. The only good thing is eye doctor can put eyedrop to confirm the accuracy of the test.

The bill still comes up to $50 with polyclinic referral letter.

Hi, anyone went to point optical group to do ortho k lens. Any bad comments. I read up that the lens can caused cornea ulcers. Mee Mee or point optical group is better. My daughter’s degree had increased from 100+ to almost 400 from P1 to P2, very worry about her so planning to get the lens for her but do not know which optical shop is better and any long term side effect. Thanks.
