Qantas plane hit by bird strike
SYDNEY - A QANTAS Boeing 747 had to turn back to Johannesburg after one of its engines suffered a bird strike, the airline said on Wednesday, the latest in a string of incidents to beset the Australian carrier.
Qantas said the plane’s number two engine shut down with turbine damage after sucking in a bird shortly after takeoff late on Tuesday, forcing an emergency landing. There were 171 passengers on board.
‘The aircraft is being worked on by engineers,’ a Qantas spokesman told AFP.
‘It’s just a bit of damage to some of the turbine blades, it’s not a huge thing.’ One of Qantas’ smaller Boeing 717s was hit by lightning on a regional flight between the Australian destinations of Alice Springs and Darwin hours earlier, causing ‘minor damage’ to the exterior.
The incidents follow the return to Sydney of a Qantas Boeing 747 bound for Buenos Aires on Monday after it suffered an electrical fault which caused smoke to pour into the cockpit.
Qantas has been plagued with mechanical issues since grounding its fleet of Airbus A380s after an engine exploded on one of the superjumbos on November 4, forcing an emergency landing in Singapore. – AFP
Another B747 returned to Sydney a few days ago on the way to Bueno Aires due to electrical problem; and before that, another B767 from Perth to east coast needed to return due to engine vibration…
sigh !! Qantas … -
Well despite the failures, Qantas has still managed to transport the passengers safely - no lives lost! Saving Grace! It beats the airlines that have no such reported failures and then crash and all lives are lost! It brings to mind the Silkair crash!

If Qantas does not buck up on the maintenance and fleet renewal, it will be one "near miss" too many one day

a number of such flight incidents for Qantas and the 380. quite scary to fly now especially that i am going to fly on a 380 soon! :?

Like Qantas has said, engine failures are common. I myself experienced one failure while flying through a thunderstorm on an SQ flight. Engine failures are normal and wont cause the plane to crash,, there are many causes, I myself don't believe it's Qantas's fault. News already said that its the failure of a specific component in the design of the engine itself, jumping to conclusions is never good.
quite scary to fly now especially that i am going to fly on a 380 soon!
Calm down; engine failures won't crash the plane. Airbus have already rectified the problem and SQ, Qantas are replacing their engines (I think, but it should be true) now. -
Just want to relate my experience with Qantas. It happened 2 years ago. My son, wife and myself were on a flight from SIN to Perth. While the plane was getting ready to take off along the runway, there was a loud explosion. Turning to my direction of the explosion, I saw flame at one end of the wing and heard the passenger at the windows seat exclaimed "Oh my God". At that moment, everyone in the plane started screaming. My first reaction? well, I grabbed my son immediately and tell my wife let’s go. At that point u can see everyone started to move to the exit. All of a sudden, someone stood and shouted at everyone to calm down and return to your seat. At that moment, the pilot announced over the PA to inform everyone that one of the engine has malfunctioned and we are moving back.
I can still remember that moment when the exlposion went off. The first thing in my mind then was to save my son (and of course my dear wife). My wife told me I reacted so fast by grabbing my son out of his seat. She doesnt even know what happened. Haha. I just told her to go and leave everything behind.
It is an experience I dun want to live thru again. Imagine if this happened during takeoff and in midair? Anyway, after that incident, there were many reports subsequently in the newspaper about Qantas having problem with their engines and having to return to airport. I was telling my wife why is Qantas always having problem. Is it always the case or was it because of what happened to us and we pay more attention to Qantas? Anyway, that was the last time we took Qantas.
When we read about the recent incidents of Qantas, it really didn’t surprise us and we even have those deja vu feeling. Scary to even think about it. -
I understand how you feel but that should be an engine backfiring, if something goes wrong on takeoff, pilot must continue the takeoff unless it has not passed the point of no return (vee one). A plane, anyway, is designed to fly with less engines that it yas. These kind of problems alone do NOT cause crashes. Even engines falling off planes / parts breaking off (except wings and the stabilizer (or ‘tail’)). Pilots are briefed and trained on every possible emergency that might happen inflight. I hope this puts your mind to rest.

So now Qantas is taking up lawsuit against Rolls Royce for the faulty engines right?

News report said so, unless RR could conclude a negotiated financial settlement for loss of profit. The quoted figures is in the $100m range
Airbus could be up against RR too for production disruption.
Qantas also asking RR why they did not fix the identified problems when the newer Trent 900 were built with an improved parts while the older Trent 900 were not recalled to change to the improved parts
The newer A380s with new Trent 900 are not affected by the identified problems
