I'm thinking of getting a camera. What I'm looking for is sharp pictures, has some DSLR functions, can take good night shots but I don't wish to get a DSLR camera. Any recommendations?
get the canon s90 or s95.
Fulfills your requirements and great in low light! -

The Nikon 3100 is good for beginner DSLR users. Very affordable and when in doubt, just use auto or programme mode.U can get the latest Nikon DSLR D3100. I just bought one for dd, c/w a kit lens, at $800+. It is light n has 1080p video function.
Non DSLR with good manual function, can go for Nikon p7000 or Canon G12. Abt $600+ and $700+.
I get all my cameras from Cathay photo. If you want 2nd hand, try clubsnap market place. -
Canon s90 (s95) or Lumix 5 is very hot now, and suitable for entry users (good night shot, and light weight)
(..Those 3/4 Sony nex are even more expensive than entry DSLRS ! ..)
For more advice : research at http://forums.clubsnap.org/
..but please make sure you know what u want before asking :
- your budget
- your target? eg landscape(30%), portraits (20%), children (30%), candids (x %)
- weight, battery life, capability
As someone has mention, dpreview.com is another good reserach/comparison source.
Happy shopping.
I just switch to DSLR (Nikon D5000) about 3 months back, and is enjoying every moment
(oh, and Sitex coming end Nov) -
How about the Canon G12 ? My brother in law is a camera fanatic and he seems to love his G12 !!

My hubby got me the canon s95 recently as an upgrade from my 5 year old powershot. It’s great. There are auto and manual functions. Video recording is not bad either. I’m enjoying it very much.
My only gripe is that it doesn’t use regular battreries and the battery life doesn’t seem that great. It uses a canon rechargeable. I guess it saves money coz i don’t have to keep buying expensive AA batteries, but the battery has died on me a few times coz it did not diligently recharge it before going on my photo taking sprees. -
I’ve got the Canon S95. I like it.

I’ve been a LUMIX loyal fan
