      Container Y filled with marbles.
      Container Z filled with water.

The above is a common diagram found in most P4 past exam papers.

Question: If the water of Container Z is poured into Container Y, some water will be able to flow in. Explain why water can flow in?

My son's ans was: There are spaces between the marbles hence water is able to flow in.

The school marked him wrong and the given answer was Water has replaced the space taken up by the air.

      Hi,

      Here are my suggested amendments:

There are air spaces between the marbles hence water is able to flow in to take its place.

      Keywords -

      air between marbles,

      water replaces the air or
water takes the place previously occupied by the air

The answer provided by the school is according to PSLE standard...although I do understand what your son is trying to explain...have this problem explaining to son too. School wants PSLE standard answer.

IMHO, it has nothing to do with PSLE standard answer. Sorry, Janet. πŸ˜‰

Sharmila, your son's answer is too vague and did not explain his understanding of the concepts learnt under properties of matter clearly.

As the question had already stated that \"some water will be able to flow in\", so the second part of your son's answer is repetitive of the question and incomplete. In this case, the concept of DISPLACEMENT of air spaces between the marbles by water should be clearly stated. If your son had added the word \"air\" before the the word \"space\" depicting that he is referring to air taking up the space bet the marbles and carried on to write \"to take its place\" depicting the displacement concept, like what Tang had suggested, he would have gotten it correct.

              Hi,

              This is my suggested answer:

The air occupies the space between the marbles. When the water flows into the space between the marbles, the air escapes.

There were some Science guide books and assessment sold at Popular roadshows earlier...bought some of them, thinking I landed a good deal...until I realized they were old syllabus 😒 😒

'Diversity', 'The Solar System' are not taught in upper primary...now stuck with a pile of old books.
Hi Janet, how do you tell if they are old books and not the new syllabus? I bought quite a few science books from Popular bookstore too. :stupid:

There is a picture of a Bee and a Bird.

Q: State 2 similarities. (do not describe shape or size).

Ans Key: Both have wings and both can fly.
Child’s Ans: Both have wings and both lay eggs to reproduce.

My question is, is the child’s second answer acceptable since only Queen bees lay eggs and not all bees lay eggs.

                    Hi

Sometimes, such questions can be quite confusing.

In answering such questions, students should state the similarities that can be observed from the diagram. Do not rely on background or prior knowledge.

My suggested answer ----- Both have wings, both have legs (if legs are shown in the picture), both have eyes (if eyes are shown).

                    Best wishes

                      huh?
If the child state,'Both are living things and need air, food and water to survive', can it be considered as correct too? Can characteristics of living things be used for all questions relating to similarities of 2 living things, or must it be physical similarities observed from the picture given? If need to observe from picture given, on a similar question, there is a picture of a mouldy bread and a bird's nest fern.
                      Q: State 2 similarities.
Answer Key: Both reproduce using spores and both are non-flowering plants. (these answers cannot be physically concluded from the picture and need background knowledge).
Child's Ans: Both use spores to reproduce and both need air, food and water to survive.

It is frustrating to know that the child's concept is correct but answering technique may be wrong....or that I may be teaching my child the wrong thing.

                        Hi

Which testpaper is this question from?
Is there a link to the original question?

Sometimes, together with the diagram, there may may some leads guiding you to the answers.

Look at the context of the questions and apply the concepts accordingly.

                        For examples,

                        1) State the difference between how a balsam plant and mould reproduce.

                        2) How do the fungi and the fern in the pictures above obtain food?

                        3) How do a fungi and fern reproduce?

                        4) Give one difference between the two organisms shown above in terms
                        of their nutrition.

                        5) Describe how each animal would respond to a hunter firing a shot in terms of its movement.

                        6) Write down two characteristics of the above two animals which show that they belong to the same group of animals.

                        7) List one similarity in their appearance.

8)State 2 characteristics to show that it is not a bird.

                        Best wishes
