Jennifer:
I also find the weekly moxie getting ridiculous.
Ya I'm beginning to find it getting tougher each week.. and mind you, she's just in Pri 3. I wonder how she, or rather, how I am going to cope teaching her when she gets to upper Primary... Most likely the responsibility will be fully shifted to DH by then.

my dh n i are already considering letting DS go for chinese revision classes over the holidays, just by lookin at the pace of the chinese lessons, and he is only p1  my chinese results weren't that bad, but i can barely read the moxie posted here a few weeks back.
is it the norm? do other schools give such 'chim' stuff too? or is it bcos PH is a sap school? -

The moxie list is same as last year. Your ds is in P1, so the school will give more time to let them adjust. Term 1 is mainly focus in Hanyu Pinyin, mastering that will help in the long run. -
Jennifer:
This week's moxie is really long. Yesterday I spent 1 hour with him to memorise it and I could see that he started to have more and more difficulty due to the length. Fortunately the characters are getting simpler it seems.I was told by my P4 boy that the CL teacher made them do the P5 exercises in the Da Zi Pao. I was like :? Trying to push or demoralise the pupils?

Same here. DD CL teacher also wanted them to do both P5 and P6 exercises in Zhi Shi Bao last year. -

DS' HYPY is quite disastrous as I had to choose between focusing on phonics or HYPY for him previously. He is mildly dyslexic, so he really couldn't 'hear' the sounds of each word.. rite now we are working on both phonics n HYPY foundations.. it's a real struggle.
Can I ask how do you teach the HYPY for 叶?
DS learns 'y' as 一 and 'e' as 饿
so he asked how can it be when placed together it sounds 叶?
:? i don't remember how i picked up HYPY anymore, and questions like that i really can't answer!! -

I don't know whether it's wise to coach a young kid both HYPY & phonics at the same time as I think he/she may have difficulty differentiating between the two and may end up rather confused.DS' HYPY is quite disastrous as I had to choose between focusing on phonics or HYPY for him previously. For mine, I taught him to recognise basic hanzhi before sending him for HYPY course. -
Mrsbongz:
My dw teaches them not me, my HYPY is worst than my dd. But I do remember that P1 they can be tested on writing HYPY on any pictures in the textbook.Trapwithin:

I believe in this approach as well, but sadly MOE think otherwise.
They learn HYPY before recognising the han zi. -

Same here. My dd2 is learning solely 汉字, I'll let her pick up 汉语拼音 next year at K2. This seems to work for dd1 last time, the only tricky part for 汉语拼音 was to remember the 上上音词语 with both chars at third sounds, for e.g 老虎, 蚂蚁, 雨伞 etc. The child has to remember to indicate the third sound for the first char although it's read as the second sound (阳平). I compiled a list of such 词语 for my dd to run thru while waiting for her schoolbus when she was P1, I purposely asked her to read in 上上音. The funnier it sounds to her, the better she remembers them.markfch:
