Preparing kids for P5 in 2011
-
I am so stress…another 2 weeks would be CA1 and not much revision was done with my Ds, just TIME NOT ENOUGH !! Everyday he has loads of homework and by the time he finishes them, it’s his sleeping time. Just seen his mock Eng CA1 test, he done badly, especially the Comprehension Cloze and open ended Compre. So little time, but so much need to accomplish in such a short time for CA1, really don’t know how.

Thanks, Brenda! DD got 8 out of 20. She could do the toughest problem sum, but lost 4 marks to carelessness (copied numbers wrongly - sighz)Peony:
DD's class just had mock maths test. Half the class failed. Lowest marks was zero out of 20. And theirs is supposedly the best class. Dunno how much they can improve in time for CA1..
The fraction topics in P5 covers term like remaining, equal amount at beginning or equal amount after spending etc. As such, have to be careful of all these terms otherwise may solve wrongly.
Just my 2 cents thought
Hope she will improve in time. Am geting used to the \"low\" marks. Really have to show her that I'll be happy as long as she gives her best. Just want to motivate her. -

Yes, the homework is killing !
Mine was not given the mock CA but the Eng worksheets...son himself couldn't believe the difficulty. How to prepare for CA1 when time is SO TIGHT ??? -
Hi Mummies,
Since English for CA and SA covers just about everything, can anyone recommend a good one pls ? I’m looking for an Eng assessment book which has everything that will be tested - Grammar, Vocab, Grammar cloze, vocab cloze, comprehension cloze, synthesis, editing, comprehension MCQ and OE. Any recommendations ? Thanks. -

In my case, I identify DD's weakness and just zoom in on them.Hi Mummies,

For grammar, I use the Upper Primary Grammar Guide by Teachers' Production. DD only got subject-agreement qns right after understanding the rules clearly explained in this book.
For compre: EPB's The Ultimate Guide to Mastering Compre.
Sorry, have not identified any good all in ONE book. I have bought the PSLE ones, but DD has not had a chance to do any. -

Hi Peony
For maths, important is to grasp the concept of fraction, percentage & ratio etc and with more practice she will improve in time. FYI, we also spent many of our time focus in maths last year. -
Peony:
I have a separate assessment for Grammar, Vocab, Synthesis, Compre and Cloze...but with time so tight, it's wiser (hopefully) to get an assessment book to do a complete exercise. I have the Teachers' Production grammar guide. Will go thru the subject-agreement with him.

Last night, he had a tough time getting a pic compo done...even writing an introduction was not going smoothly. -

Am still struggling with compo. Intro is the ONLY part that DD does well!
Make it short and sweet. Many kids these days start with dialogue, so she starts with a sound or question to be different. -
Hi Peony,
Now I understand why not to buy too many assessment books…time is really so short and tight. One EL compo and that’s it…no time for other things, worse if brain is jammed that day.
Intro for CL compo seems easier in the sense that can refer to 作文 reference, turn to 开头 and choose any one you prefer. Not quite possible for EL compo. Do you think so ? Son’s compo last night was on 1 pic…in a park, a lady jogger was knocked down by someone roller blading. First time he had to do a pic compo…did his situational ones in school. -
Hi Brenda/Peony,
I got this title ‘Zoom in Vocabulary for Creative Writing’. It consists of different themes, has power words as well as exercise on the model passage. Rather disappointed themes covered didn’t include normal scene like ‘park’, ‘supermarket’. Also got this title ‘Write Your Way to an A’ by SAP publications. When desperate, nothing seems to be somewhat related to compo.
