Hi porcupine,
Hi Keltong,
I belong to the same cat as you too... I think all kids are different so I also take the same approach as you, also small part of it is i am lazy
Thanks for sharing, I will do the same as you on the 2 letters blending first. it was not intentional to skip 2 letters blending, it was really forgotten haaa. Also coz 2 letters blending doesnt make sense, eg ag, ad, ab doesnt mean anything so my son was turn off. How did your son respond to the \"meaningless\" 2 letters? and yes, its very tiring to try getting them \"interested\"!! looking for stuff to relate to the words etc.
I missed this post of yours.
As we have been doing the 'a' vowel for quite a while, it was easy when I go back to re-enforce on the 2 letter words. After finishing all the 'a' vowel, I decided to go to the 'e' vowel which has less words, and I was surprised he got it immediately and we did all the 'e' vowel 2 letter and 3 letter words in like just 5-10 mins. So I asked him how did he know so fast. He told me he did it on the starfall.com website. He grew bored with the ABC letter sounds and went to play the words forming game and managed to learn from there. So I have to credit starfall.com for that. I was skeptical in the beginning about the starfall.com word blending games as it seems limited, but I have to rethink that.
So since then, it has been quite easy to do the 2 letter words with him. I will do 2 letter words of a particular vowel (say 'i'), than will start to go through the 3 letter words (of 'i') so that he can quickly go from meaningless 2 letter words to meaningful 3 letter words. So far it work for my boy. For my boy, praising him, high 5s, hugging is enough to motivate him as he is the emotional type so you will have to see what motivates yours, can't say my method will work for everyone.
As he gain more confident, the vowels later seems to be easier for him. After doing the massive 'i' vowel (massive because a lot of 3 letter words), which took a few more days, I find that when I was going through the 'o' vowel with him, he is already very smooth with the method.
During normal times, I also try to make sure he does not memorize the words by asking him to spell words we come across. So far so good even though he stumble at some of it but manage to do it after some prompting. -
Hi Tamarind
I think my son is not ready to read Peter and Jane yet, I was teaching him using 1a and 1b, he can \"read\" the whole of 1a, and if i am not wrong, its by memory. Then I visited your phonics blog and realised I may have intro the books too early to him.
My son is coming 37mths and I find him still babyish. For sure he does not know how to use the computer, neither does his K2 sis. My P2 gal also has very limited computer skills. This is because I do not encourage them to use computer, I prefer them to like the \"boring\" black and white books first  . Hence he will not be able to use Starfall.com independently or navigate around the site. Though from what I see, i agree it is a great site, maybe i have to spend sometime sitting with him?
I need to check with you, i have introduced all \"a\" 2 letters + \"a\" 3 letters to him. After your advice, I focus more on 2 letters first then ad on the 3 letters. I notice if I say the word eg \"at, ag, ab, ap etc\"..he is able to pick out all for me. If i say the 3 letters \"a\" words, he is able to pick out 95% of them even if I did not go thru the words with him before. I believe he uses his \"hearing\" to pick out and not by memory. I tried other words in random, and he can tell me which letter/sound they begin with. But the problem is he cant \"read\" out some of the words! sometimes he will go \"a....g...ga!\"...he reads backwards!!! So in short, when I ask him to pick out the words etc, he has no issue, but when I ask him to read, sometimes he will read backwards! Is it normal, and what should be done?
Also does that mean I should not teach him how to read yet using P&J...just focus on reading other books with him, to continue build his interest in reading? btw, his writing skills is still not acceptable, shld i be concerned and is it ok if I just focus on his reading and put writing aside? (they will learn how to write in time to come even if I do not train him?) Thanks, you'v been such a great help, really appreciate. -

Do u mean give him single letters + all the ag, ad, ab, at etc and get him to for 3 letter words? sounds found, i nvr tot of that, thanks for sharing.porcupine12trade:

Yes like keltong wrote, it is better to teach the 2 letter words first, when he is familiar with them, then move on to 3 letter words.
When he can read the 3 letter words, you should also test him by asking him to pickup the letters that form a word. He should be able to pick the correct letters just by listening to the sounds.
Same qn i asked keltong, 2 letters blending seem meaningless to a child, how to get them interested? My son is turn off coz they dont mean anything to him, so i quickly jump to 3 letter blending to interest him
Yes. This is for young children who are not good at writing yet. For kids who can already write all the letters, just ask them to write will do.[/quote]

Forgot to check this thread.
I bought my copies from http://www.amazon.com. They ship direct to Singapore. The cost of shipping is USD3.99 per DVD, and USD4.99 per shipment.
If you only buy one DVD, shipping costs the same as the DVD. You can consider buying more and reselling them
The website provided by laughingcat is quite reasonable in price.
These 3 DVDs are essential :
Letter Factory
Talking Words Factory
Word Caper
I basically only showed these DVDs and Richard Scarry's Best Counting Video Ever! to my kids when they were 2 to 5 years old, and nothing else. These are the only DVDs that kids need to watch at that age
