      http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC110330-0000060/Electricity-tariffs-up-6,5-from-April

\"SINGAPORE - The surge in oil prices in recent months will push electricity prices here to their highest in two-and-a-half years: From Friday, power tariffs between April and June will increase by 6.5 per cent from the first quarter to hit 25.58 cents per kilowatt hour, SP Services said yesterday.

The increase will cost the average household in a four-room flat an extra S$4.85 monthly.

However, HDB households will be buffered from the hike - thanks to rebates under the \"Grow and Share\" package which were announced during the Budget in February....\"

Did they only announce this increase a couple of days back??
      Why such short notice?
And they conveniently omit this information during Budget annoucement...

      :stupid: :stupid: :stupid:

Got to say, they dare to do this just before elections…

SP Services shd be more forthcoming rather than use d same old rationale

of oil prices surge when d power plants in SG hv increasing shifted to
more efficient combined cycle technology using cheaper natural gas!

Recently we on the air-con at 9.30pm and set the timer for it to switch off 3 hours after 11pm. Hopefully this can also help to save some $$$.

Dis is fr d Senoko website:

Senoko Services Pte. Ltd. (SSPL) provides storage tank leasing and terminal services through our Senoko Marine Operations Centre (SMOC). Operational since September 2009, the SMOC is managed by a team of experienced personnel to provide service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The SMOC is currently the only service provider in the northern part of Singapore providing oil storage tank leasing and terminal- related services. Its facilities comprise seven diesel oil storage tanks with a total capacity of about 260,000 m3. The congestion free terminal near Woodlands has a jetty with 11.5 m draft that is capable to serve vessel up to 274 m LOA. This terminal has been determined by Platts as an additional delivery point for FOB Singapore.

Why r d 7 diesel oil storage tanks no longer essential for Senoko power generation but is available for leasing?
Coz it is no longer reliant on diesel oil but uses natural gas.
                  Dis is just one example.
So wat has oil price surge got to do with dis increase in electricity tariff when
natural gas for power generation has increased to > 78% compared to
                  19% in 2000?

Dis is taken fr d e2singapore.gov.sg website dat was last updated on 21 March 2011:

                    POWER GENERATION

                    Introduction

The power generation sector accounts for about half of the total fuel consumption in Singapore. This energy is used to generate electricity, which is then used to power Singapore homes and industries.

Given the large amounts of fuel consumed by the power generation sector, improving energy efficiency in power generation would have a significant impact on the overall energy efficiency in Singapore. Improving energy efficiency not only mitigates the environmental impact of the fuels used, it also allows the power generation companies to increase their revenues by increasing the amount of electricity they can deliver to the end consumer with the same amount of input fuel.

                    Power Generation Efficiency

Since the liberalisation of the electricity market, the power generation companies have moved towards the increased use of natural gas combined-cycle turbine technology. From 2000 to 2006, the electricity generated by natural gas has increased from 19% to 78%. As a result, Singapore’s overall power generation efficiency has improved from 38% in 2000 to 44% in 2006.
                    2000 \t2001 \t2002 \t2003 \t2004 \t2005 \t2006
                    Electricity Generated by Natural Gas \t19% \t29% \t44% \t60% \t69% \t74% \t78%

Besides switching fuels, power generation companies can also adopt technologies that would allow them to extract more useful energy from the fuels burnt. Such technologies are already available, and have been successfully implemented in other countries. For example, cogeneration and trigeneration technologies can help companies significantly increase the overall efficiency of generating power and utilities like steam and chilled water.

                    Cogeneration and Trigeneration Technologies

In the power generation process, a significant amount of heat is produced from the fuel combustion process. In many power plants, this heat is not captured and is thus wasted. In co-generation (also known as combined heat and power), the waste heat is captured and used to generate steam, which can then be piped to companies and buildings that require heating. The use of cogeneration can increase the energy efficiency from about 50% to more than 75%. The efficiency of trigeneration plants can be even higher, when chilled water is also produced using the waste heat.

Somebody on another site has been keeping tabs on the electricity hikes:
                      [quote]For 2010:

                      Dec 30, 2009:

ELECTRICITY prices are on the rise for the fourth consecutive quarter.

The electricity tariff is set to go up by 5.4 per cent from 21.69 cents to 22.87 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in the first quarter of the new year.

This increase is for the period of Jan - Mar 2010.

                      Mar 30, 2010

ELECTRICITY tariff for Singapore households will go up again in the coming quarter, due to the fuel oil price hike over the last three months.

The new rate for the April to June quarter.

                      about 3 per cent higher

                      June 30, 2010:

ELECTRICITY bill for Singapore households will go up by 2.42 per cent in the next quarter from July to September.

                      Sep 30, 2010:

Power bill to fall 3.3% (Oct - Dec)

                      Dec 30, 2010:

Higher electricity costs for the start of 2011

THE average cost of electricity is expected to increase by 3.3 per cent from Jan 1 to Mar 31 2011.

                      So in conclusion, for 2010:
                      Jan - Mar : Up - 5.4%
                      April - June : Up - 3%
                      July - Sep : Up 2.42%
                      Oct - Dec : Down 3.3%
