Teachers from India join S'pore schools

Talking about being retrenched at 40 and changes in society. This is really off topic but i just can’t help but to share this…
In the past, it is mandatory for food handlers or hawkers to receive yearly typhoid vaccination to prevent the spread of typhoid. MOH must have realised that SG is safe enough and removed this vaccination and in place put in courses and tests for safe food handling. (esp after the Geylang Serai food poisoning incident). My 60 year soo kueh auntie tells me, "Wa liao, at my age still want me to study, if i can study still need to sell soo kueh?" "Miss, it is ok lah… please give me the jab instead lah!!!" -
True that MOE's teaching job may not be the best paying in our job market... unless you're those superscale fellas...
For the SG fresh grads... it's one with low starting pay... esp when they compare with their peers in other fields...
For the SG mid-careers... it's one with big pay cuts... and long hours...
But for the FTs (majority)... it's one with better pay and perks... esp when they compare with their own local country (*Exclude those minority 1st world country fellas)
So really, who are the ones with greater passion for teaching?
:celebrate: -
I agree. With that kind of pay in S$, FTs from PRC and India surely are more than happy to teach or work here. I Hope MOE and other Ministries would employ only the really talented and committed FTs.

maybe they require local applicants to have very good English results
Thats really crazy... That means normal people with ordinary results can kiss their MOE application hopes good bye... I often wonder what lies ahead in the 40s. Have to focus on the thread... Yes, I would like to understand MOE's criteria too.tamarind:
I used to have an ex-colleague in his 40s, university graduate in engineering, worked as a manager before. He was desperate to get a job, applied to MOE, but was rejected. His results in university were very good. I don't really understand what sort of people MOE are looking for.
Have you read the famous Derek Wee's blog ?

Hm, is this the blog that led to the famous \"get out of my elite uncaring face\" quote by one of the daughter of the elite class? His thoughts are reflected in plenty of places.

Ok, I am ready to be bashed. I prefer to see things on the other side of the fence. If it had been a Australian , Briton or Scottish with a strong accent teaching our kids, would we be protesting so much? Or would we see that it is privileged to be taught by these teachers???.
nope, not all ang mo are fluent in english. and i have had my fair share of meeting them.
and i am not bashing you or anyone. :nunchuk: nope nope
my english is not good so i need someone who can help my kids. but if the australian, briton or scot has a strong accent which makes it difficult to understand, i might change the teacher. but kids are strange, they tend to understand them better than i do so if my kids like it, then so be it.
however, i also need to watch out for the kind of values they might be imparting to my kids especailly dd during talks, discussions etc.
a bit off topic, i wish someone could cancel the bi-lingual programmes on the chinese radio channels like 88.3. my english is bad but the djs are really.............. :!: :faint: -

I would love to take local Singaporeans. However, I can only afford to pay $800+ a month. I need a maid at home from 7am to 9pm everyday, due to my hectic work schedule. When my kids were babies, I need a maid 24 hours a day, because I could not wake up in the night to take care of them, and still go to work in the morning.
I don’t think I can find any Singaporean maid to work for me.

i was thinking of getting someone to cook dinner from mon-fri and cant find anyone thru agencies.
then i realise the most effective way to get someone might be to put up an ad in the papers especially the chinese evening papers.
currently i am able to cope but if there is a need, i might consider doing so. -

I think we need to be fair to teachers from India.
I used to have a very good Indian teacher in RGS. I can understand her many times better than my Physics teacher who spoke Hokkien accented English. But I guess that Indian teacher is born locally.
A couple of months ago, I attended a course taught by a trainer from India. He speaks very well, one of the best trainers that I have ever encountered, and far better than many local teachers/trainers.
Let’s hope that MOE selects the teachers carefully.
