So it is possible to cover MR even with 8 days on hand.

Yes, in fact you may be able to do it in 3 nights at MR.

Opps.. sorry I meant to say Albany.

hi, we went to Perth in 2009. A family of 7 adts & 2 kids. My sil booked all flights, hotels & tours online. It may cost more than a package booked thru a travel agt but at least, we can better manage our own time.

But we only booked 2 tours: casverham wildlife cum pinnacles & rockingham island (dolphin cruise & watch). the rest of the time, we move ard on our own like going to fremantle, AQWA, etc..

I was in Perth 3 years ago doing a self drive with the Qantas 3 day package. I would recommend Busselton Jetty http://www.busseltonjetty.com.au/ which is a few hours south of Perth. I suppose you can stay one night at Margaret River http://www.margaretriver.com/ if you are interested in wines and outdoor activities. I did visit a cave there.

If you are interested in Farm stays, I would recommend http://www.ausbusiness.net/windmill/about.htm . The owners of the farm are very nice and they will cook for you and bring you around their farm. If you have small children, they would love it. DS was 3 years old when we brought him there. He loved the place.
There is a zoo nearby but I can't remember the name.

There shouldn't be any problem driving around Perth. I did drive to Frementle but didn't dare to explore much then since I don't have GPS then. But be warned that you must be prepared for long drives as distances between attractions are quite far apart.

Public transport in the city centre is OK but if you want to get out to the great outdoors and see more things in those few days, it can be quite time-consuming and troublesome esp with young kids. Self-drive is still the best.

Public transport is ok if you have no time limit.
