Didn't visit this thread for a while.

Last week, teacher started teaching actual Chinese chapters...think she is quite slow, so rushing to finish 1A...that means 听写 quite 'on' until May.
Honestly, I've neglected daughter again bcos of SA1 preparation...really dread to think of next year when she is in P2 and son in P6 :?: :?:
      Janet,
Don't feel guilty - we are here to cheer you :celebrate:..Understand it is not easy to manage 2 kids in the primary session esp one in the crucial P5 and one in P1! Take heart - we KSP are here to 加油 for you!

Me at times also feel neglects my DD2 who in K2 compares with DD1 in P3 but tell myself - I will do my best for both to balance! :rahrah:

            hi everyone,

i am new to this forum and glad to find this link as a support. my girl is in P1. we were in houston before so my girl’s english is way better than her chinese. usually she speaks english at home and we replied in english or cantonese. she never formally received hua yu education as we are from hk.
luckily she has a very good chinese teacher who knows that she is weak on chinese foundation and gave my girl more chance to practise in class. my girl likes her teacher so much and she also likes to learn chinese. but still not enough, teacher called me and said my girl shows good progress in writing chinese and scored full marks everytime in chinese hypy spelling or dictation, but her listening and oral is very poor. the teacher is worrying about if my girl will have problems when the chinese lesson is getting more and more advance and difficult. i am worrying as well.
i need some advice from all of you pls. is there a way to help my girl except sending her to those chinese enrichment classes? cos i don’t want to send her to those classes… any at home resources that i can use to improve my girls oral and listening to chinese? thanks in advance.

              Hi tamama,

I learnt diction and pronounciation from watching Channel 8 shows in the past - but the shows (esp the prime time ones) nowadays are pretty rubbish.

I would suggest that you get some of those chinese cartoons and let her watch. You may like to consider cartoons like 喜羊羊 and doraemon were discussed in another thread.

How about trying to find someone who can just come & speak Chinese to her a few days a week. Not tuition as such but just a good Chinese speaker. You might need to hire a tutor or maybe you can find someone who wants to exchange English for Chinese - a mainland Chinese student who wants to practise their English?

thanks nms1, where to find and contact this kind of students? looks like even though my girl's school has a lot of chinese kids, most of them prefer to speak english most of the time. is it sg kids like to speak english more than hua yu in general? but true, sg kids' english level is really top. :imcool:

                      hi tamama,

I think you should try those video shops located in town centres - I've seen those dvds in video stores in parkway parade, toa payoh. Popular MAY not have.

If you have the chance to go China, go grab some of those dvds. I've seen the nat geo/bbc shows...not sure if these have been dubbed into chinese. my sis brought back Dora cds...and they were in chinese.
