How about trying to find someone who can just come & speak Chinese to her a few days a week. Not tuition as such but just a good Chinese speaker. You might need to hire a tutor or maybe you can find someone who wants to exchange English for Chinese - a mainland Chinese student who wants to practise their English?

        Hi tamama,

I learnt diction and pronounciation from watching Channel 8 shows in the past - but the shows (esp the prime time ones) nowadays are pretty rubbish.

I would suggest that you get some of those chinese cartoons and let her watch. You may like to consider cartoons like 喜羊羊 and doraemon were discussed in another thread.
thanks for the reply hquek, cartoons will be good and entertaining. last time in hk when my girl was 2-3, she watched doraemon in cantonese. i wonder she still remembers or not... my i know if i can get the hua yu version of these cartoon in the bookstore like Pxpxlxx? or have to go dvd store?
channel 8 is not working for me... :imdrowning: my hua yu is just a bit better than my girl... watching hua yu channel is killing me... and my girls favourite channel always be the nat geo wild/ discovery... :boogie: she just love those stuff...

thanks nms1, where to find and contact this kind of students? looks like even though my girl's school has a lot of chinese kids, most of them prefer to speak english most of the time. is it sg kids like to speak english more than hua yu in general? but true, sg kids' english level is really top. :imcool:

            hi tamama,

I think you should try those video shops located in town centres - I've seen those dvds in video stores in parkway parade, toa payoh. Popular MAY not have.

If you have the chance to go China, go grab some of those dvds. I've seen the nat geo/bbc shows...not sure if these have been dubbed into chinese. my sis brought back Dora cds...and they were in chinese.

My P1 girl was doing great during her Chinese lessons and mock exams. But during her finals, she got very low grades and it was quite discouraging for all of us. Chinese is not her first language and we never use it at home. Though she is enrolled in extra classes in school, she still find it quite a challenge when exams deal with full sentences already. Is it a good decision to transfer her to a different subject, like French or Malay?

You can use the training material which is popular in China training center. When you finished the first 4 books. Your kids can read simple story books like Primary 1 of China School. If you kids can finish 8 books. It's almost get 80000 Chinese words and the level as Primary 5/6 as China students. You just need 5-10 mins every day. also they are interested and find fun of Chinese. Enjoy it.

                      hi happy88mum,

Yes, I think it's good for a child to learn HYPY only in K2 - and if you like, the latter half of K2. HYPY is not used in K level, so learning it early I feel may result in them forgetting how to use it.

In P1, there's a fair amount of stuff in HYPY - in fact, DS1's school first term's spelling were all in HYPY.

As for centre, it depends on location, timing and very imptly, bonding with the teacher. 🙂

Agree with hquek...learning HYPY preferably be learnt in last term of K2.
Get foundation for phonics first. Some kids dislike HYPY because they don't think it is Chinese....like my daughter who hates it.
