Hi tamama,
I learnt diction and pronounciation from watching Channel 8 shows in the past - but the shows (esp the prime time ones) nowadays are pretty rubbish.
I would suggest that you get some of those chinese cartoons and let her watch. You may like to consider cartoons like 喜羊羊 and doraemon were discussed in another thread.
channel 8 is not working for me... :imdrowning: my hua yu is just a bit better than my girl... watching hua yu channel is killing me... and my girls favourite channel always be the nat geo wild/ discovery... :boogie: she just love those stuff...
I think you should try those video shops located in town centres - I've seen those dvds in video stores in parkway parade, toa payoh. Popular MAY not have.
If you have the chance to go China, go grab some of those dvds. I've seen the nat geo/bbc shows...not sure if these have been dubbed into chinese. my sis brought back Dora cds...and they were in chinese. -
Tamama:
Pasar malam selling doraemon cartoons at $5 for 3 CDs :boogie:

My P1 girl was doing great during her Chinese lessons and mock exams. But during her finals, she got very low grades and it was quite discouraging for all of us. Chinese is not her first language and we never use it at home. Though she is enrolled in extra classes in school, she still find it quite a challenge when exams deal with full sentences already. Is it a good decision to transfer her to a different subject, like French or Malay?

You can use the training material which is popular in China training center. When you finished the first 4 books. Your kids can read simple story books like Primary 1 of China School. If you kids can finish 8 books. It's almost get 80000 Chinese words and the level as Primary 5/6 as China students. You just need 5-10 mins every day. also they are interested and find fun of Chinese. Enjoy it.

Yes, I think it's good for a child to learn HYPY only in K2 - and if you like, the latter half of K2. HYPY is not used in K level, so learning it early I feel may result in them forgetting how to use it.
In P1, there's a fair amount of stuff in HYPY - in fact, DS1's school first term's spelling were all in HYPY.
As for centre, it depends on location, timing and very imptly, bonding with the teacher.

Agree with hquek...learning HYPY preferably be learnt in last term of K2.

Get foundation for phonics first. Some kids dislike HYPY because they don't think it is Chinese....like my daughter who hates it. -
happy88mum,
FYI, SHHK has posted their enrolment for their HYPY class. there’s only 12 lessons in total and they only do this at the tail end of the year. I asked previously and they said that if they run the class earlier, kids will end up forgetting what they learnt due to un-use.
My kids are with SHHK classes. it’s in Toa Payoh central. I find their teachers and materials good. We haven’t tried their P1 ‘qiang hua’ class - understand this is more in tune with the MOE syllabus. But for the other classes like ‘lele class’ (N2 to K1), P1 oral and listening class, I give 2 thumbs up. -

Have you tried the P2/P3 reading class. And I understand that their class enrolment will open to existing students and need to put on waiting list. -
hi monstermummy,
Am considering the reading class. I thought they had that for P1 but turn out only the ‘qiang hua’ class and this oral listening one. Understand that qiang hua class is strictly like what they do in school. I want him to read more chinese books but boh pian, oral and listening is next best (then).
Enrolment will be open in phases. Existing students first, then followed by SHHK members and finally public. Not too sure about waitlist becos long time back, I started him in speech and drama midway through the year - so we could join the first phase (machiam like primary school) for the new year.
