What he needs to do is to read each char individually, not as a whole 词语 e.g 老虎, read 老 and 虎 individually, both are third sounds so when he indicates, he has to indicate both individual sounds. Same for 举手, 洗脸, 可以, 美好, 小狗, 蚂蚁 etc.
Ya, that's wat I try to get ds to do.. but at this age, he doesn't care very much if he doesn't get good grades.. :frustrated:
markfch:
Same for us, ds tells me he hates Chinese.. but I tell him that I hate CHinese too, but I also learnt and got decent grades. The trouble is we hardly ever watch TV programmes. If you minus 1 hr of gaming plus 1 hr of piano practice daily, there's hardly any time left for TV. And my chinese also cannot-make-it one, how to converse properly leh?
markfch:
Thankfully with his teachers and the counselor's help, as well as the student care teachers', he is much better these 2 weeks. Hopefully he will not repeat this behaviour after June Holidays. This past 1.5 mths have been so stressful, I am thankful that ds has gd support circle to help him thru.. Btw, really happy to hear that your ds is doing well in chinese. DS told me recently that your ds is coping better with sch life nowadays. :celebrate:
 Maybe I'll ask ds whether he wants your ds to teach him. His quite 'proud' one, only want to seen as strong (that's what the student care teacher told me). I'll casually ask him tonight.
DS is much better with HYPY now, but he is still way behind in character recognition and writing. Our 2 boys should teach each other then. I have so much trouble getting him to read chinese books. :nunchuk: -

Yesterday lunch time, We were in a big rush of panic buying in watson. -
English paper 1, The composition result came out, the differ is not much. seems many pupils got 16/20, one got 18/20 for all I know.
hi, Happy mama, how about your or your dd's source?
 -
Thanks to all for your kind suggestions.

DS problem is not really this. He understands the rule that if both hanzi are 第三声, the first on must be written as 第二声. His problem is that somehow he confuses 第二声 & 第三声. Tonight I resolve to put on my 'smiling' face, and politely work with ds on this again. What he needs to do is to read each char individually, not as a whole 词语 e.g 老虎, read 老 and 虎 individually, both are third sounds so when he indicates, he has to indicate both individual sounds. If I still make no headway, then career-minded or not, I'll insist that dw step in and do this coaching job as she's much better in chinese. Can't stand it if ds were to carry this problem into P2.Jennifer:
Sunday morning got 百力果, he also not at home to watch. But I agree that watching chinese shows is very good in promoting the language. I remembered after watching the comical 灰太狼, ds became more conversant and interested in chinese.Sunday Channel 8 morning has good children programme. My boys do not watch, I am the one watching. Got a very interesting one \"Accompany Daddy & Mummy to work\". Last week featured a Chinese restaurant owner giving his 2 kids a hands on experience in his restaurant completed with wet mkt trip.
Mrsbongz:
My ds is just the opposite. I consider ds to be quite good in character recognition; he's able to complete most of the 好朋友 mag exercises by himself since the turn of the year but I don't know why his HYPY is so junk. Maybe it's because I got him into reading hanzi right from the start; and hardly bothered about HYPY so now we're paying the price.DS is much better with HYPY now, but he is still way behind in character recognition and writing. Our 2 boys should teach each other then. I have so much trouble getting him to read chinese books. :nunchuk:
Yes, how nice if our kids can help each other become better students and people. :please: -

Two with 19/20 in R9. Not sure whether that's the highest.English paper 1, The composition result came out, the differ is not much. seems many pupils got 16/20, one got 18/20 for all I know.

Don't want to confuse you further but do you mean 'read as' 第二声, not written as? The first char should still be indicated with its rightful sound which is 第三声. -

I think HYPY is not very impt. Only tested up to P3. After P3, no longer see HYPY qns. By then, I am sure most kids hv heard enough to know the proper pronounciation. Think no worth to sweat over this.Tonight I resolve to put on my 'smiling' face, and politely work with ds on this again.

Your boy is good at recognising whole character, this is more crucial. Spend the precious time learning more characters rather than get stuck with this HYPY.
But if you really insist on perfecting HYPY, perhaps buy a CL dictionary. Flip to any 第二声 / 第三声 pages and read aloud the character's HYPY from its base to its right tone. Daily drilling for 5 to 10 mins shld help differentiate the tones. At the same time, learn more character. Kills 2 birds with 1 stone.
By the way, how's the sch CL teacher teach HYPY? Read the HYPY as a whole or break up into its components (like EL phonics)?
But I suspect the issue is not knowing the 4 tones of HYPY. More like he does not know the proper pronounciation of the character. This type of prob can only be resolved by listening to/learning the proper pronounication. Hence I still recommend the CL dictionary learning method.
Just my 2cts worth.
