Does GEP Student Require Tuition???
-
Zann:
My ds does not have tuition in Maths and from what I observed he is using the method taught by his school teacher without any equation. Its a lot of models, tabulation, arrows ..etc and it could solve the problem sum. He has never been taught using equation and therefore I can't teach him maths as I only learn algebra last time. Yes, equation method can also solve the sum, but not all in their kind of problem sum nowadays. So it is better to pay attention in school. Engage up-to-date tutor if needed ...thmejlfm:
.. They can tell her use the equation, that equation. My DD told me she don't know what equation???
Her classmate learnt it from her tuition.
Then, what did the class teacher do??
Or is it my DD never concentrate in her class?
Go and get an assessment book by Andrew Er, retail at $15.90. it comes with level1-3 difficulties on problem sums. Suitable for pupils of high A standard aspiring to score A*
Practice it deligently during June holidays and the kids should be able to solve all the difficult problem sums thrown to them during PSLE.
Easily can have 30 mins left for checking, ok. -

Ya lor, what is there to paiseh. Last year top PSLE student was from GEP, also openly said he has tuition, and for all subjects. If a kid on gep needs to go for tuition just go for it no need to feel embarass.
Whether is group or one to one to catch up or top the class or even level, go ahead if time and finance permit.
No room for paiseh if their schoolmates from mainstream do recognise them. -
Zann:
Oh I know many GEP kids having enrichment, some are having tuition for their projects. I am actually used to it.

Correct! Nothing to be paisei. Kids’
long term interests are paramount importance. All others are secondary including loss of face etc…
Cannot enter top schools nevermind just go to the next best school. Shut our ears from all unwelcome remarks. -
i think formula is being used for the investigation maths paper… I heard that the formula taught at sch is different from the formula taught at tuition centre… And my dd’s teacher discourage his pupils from gg to tuition… So for maths my dd no longer has tuition for maths subject…

I didn’t expect my dd to qualify for GEP. Thinking back, we just consented for her to take the screening test and the next thing we knew, we were told she passed the screening test and again, we consented for her to take the selection test. We don’t know what is gifted and what is not. We simply think no harm to participate in those tests as we were not concern about the outcome. Then she told us she was selected for GEP. We are very proud of her as she did this without any tuition except enrichment class for English.
Now that she is in GEP, we have also enrolled her for Chinese enrichment class. She still has no tuition for maths and science and we intend to keep it that way. We don’t want to bog her down with too many outside school activities. She is doing ok but the marks scored are no longer in the high 80s or 90s range but we have been warned this would be the case in the briefing session by GEP branch and we are ok. So long the scores are high 70s we are happy and would not send her for more tuition. -
Zann:
yeah, I agree. If the child wants to learn more and the school is unable to challenge the child's mind, then tuition/enrichment is the way to go to broaden his horizons. Of course, if the child wants to spend his free time playing sports, that's another story. Still, I think if the child is bright, he would have enough time for both.

Well to answer this question. Yes, not all, but a large number do and its nothing new.
I was from the Gifted Education Programme (Rosyth Pri & Raffles Institution) many years back and even then, some of my classmates were already having tuition in their weaker subjects. You have to remember that being in the GEP does not guarantee that you're an all rounder. Most have specific strengths/abilities in certain subjects, with some being better in languages and others being better in the maths/sciences.
I personally never did have tuition in my whole schooling life (except for Chinese which was in a very bad shape. Quite ironic considering i come from a Chinese educated family). On the plus side, Maths and Science was never a problem for me. As for English, it was a rude shock when my marks went from the high 90's/full marks in Pri 3 to the low 50's when i took my first GEP English Common Test in Pri 4. My Mom for some reason refused to hire English tutors for me and I took the hard route by reading more books, memorizing good English phrases, and listening to the BBC world service every night before i sleep. After while, my marks improved dramatically, i ended up with an A* for the PSLE and never had problems with English again.
I currently teach GEP/High Ability/Mainstream students and i have to agree that some non-GEP students are late bloomers so even though they did not make it through the 2nd round of the GEP selection test, they would really start to shine when they are in Pri 5. So for those who don't make it through the GEP selection stage, don't despair, its just a test, just continue working hard and everyone's time to shine will come eventually.
I currently specialize in mentoring GEP/High Ability/Mainstream students who are weaker in either Maths or Science. For some of the weaker students, i teach and drill critical thinking skills (meta-cognition), problem solving skills and heuristics using the \"Cognitive Conceptual Approach in Learning Mathematics\" which is used in some of the better schools for their own students. For those that are already reasonably good in their Maths and Science, i push them even further so that they achieve consistent A* Stars in their exams (and PSLE) and also provide training for the Maths Olympiad/International Maths Competitions. Also, i provide guidance in their projects, research assignments, science fair submissions.
So overall, i'm more than a tutor to my students! I see myself as a mentor who is there to help them achieve their full potential so as to better place themselves for future success in life. I never did have a mentor to guide me through the pitfalls when i was in the GEP (i know a number of my classmates had one) and i always wished i had one. So now, i'm just providing a service which many GEP/High Ability students would need to help them succeed.

Hi! Glad to receive your reply.
Had gone through your website, looked very impressive. I also noticed that for this year, you already have no more vaccancy.
If I require a tutor from you, have to wait till end of this year. AM I right?
My place is at Kallang area. Will you come to Kallang area?
For your tuition, is twice a week or once? How many hours per session?
My DD did a tutor for her Maths and Science.
