PM Lee said this: \"But ministers should also be paid properly in order that Singapore can have honest, competent leadership over the long term.\"

Is that our secret formula for keeping our government corrupt-free with the high pay packages? Does that mean that the not-so-well paid politicians elsewhere will be tempted to be corrupt because \"Money no enough?\" This is interesting food for thought. What are your views?

I also wonder if it is true that once a man has a very beautiful wife at home, he will no longer look for a mistress? Is that a similar analogy? :?

that kind of obscene pay is even more lucrative than corruption, seriously and honestly. corrupted crooks will also be straightened to become honest politicians with that kind of pay. I am not the first to say this

To me, either ways, there is no difference to the pocket of the ministers at the end of the day. šŸ˜‰

                  Hi Hi,

My own wild guess of the new minister's pay should be between SGD500K to SGD800K per annum. Anybody game to poll?

This is what the top civil servants earn. If the ministers' pay is at that level, then all civil servants can also expect a pay cut, coz how can the perm sec earn more than his boss? And if perm sec's pay cut, then the deputy secretary's pay must also be cut. If the deputy secretary's pay is cut, then the director's pay must be cut, etc. etc.

 Yikes! I didn't know that! I just finished reading today's newspapers and was wondering at what the reports were saying about the top civil servants' pay. And PM's remarks about going into politics should not be seen as a \"promotion\" to the civil service etc..

So I was wondering what were they saying about the civil servants' pay? So now I know thanks for your enlightenment! So the top civil servants ALREADY at SGD500 - SGD800K! Yikes! :faint:

Everybody in the govt. service get paid so much what else is there to review? Yes, why should one jump from civil service to minister and get a pay cut? :gloomy:

So bottom-line again, how much should an average minister be paid? With my new-found knowledge, how about SGD1m to SGD1.5m? :faint: (wah piang ooi...)

Not everybody in civil service is earning so much lah. Only a handful.

DPM TCH has said civil service pay may need to be reviewed...
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1130707/1/.html I think they will need to be careful with this coz they don't want to lose too many people to the private sector.

I think it's important to settle the principles first, before talking about quantum. It may be that the moral authority for an elected office bearer requires a significant \"discount\" on salaries, but perhaps this may not apply in the same way to the civil service. if so, then it may well be possible for the perm sec to earn more than the political leadership. Imagine how inspiring it would be if the minister can say to his perm sec \" oi, I earn less than you, but I'm working harder!\"
                      :nunchuk:

But more realistically speaking, while I think a full Minister should earn at least the same as his perm sec (and i'm happy for them to earn more than the perm sec), I think the more junior office bearers (parliamentary secretaries, ministers of state) do not need to earn as much. I.e., The entry-level political salaries can be lower than the higher civil service grades.
