I am still on the lookout for a piano teacher and would appreciate recommendations. I am residing in the north and I don’t mind travelling to the teacher’s place if it is nearby. Thanks.

I know of a current Yamaha teacher w the same schedule & charging this amt for Grade 1.

$140 for a diploma grad or a bachelor degree holder with reasonable experience, I think that’s reasonable. If your child is enjoying, improving, that’s the most important thing.


As for following Yamaha holiday, that again is reasonable as you should still be getting 46 lessons or so per year.

Group generally around the region of $120, individual around $180, depending on the qualification of the teacher and whether the teacher is "in demand".

Papers are there to show that the teacher has been through musical training and SHOULD know what he/she is doing, but teaching comes with experience and the ability to communicate. That’s why not all professional performers know how to teach. Most will give masterclasses where the situation is just a one-off, and even then some are hopeless at it.


Smurf28, 45 mins lesson? Do you travel to the teacher or does the teacher come to your place? If you travel, then for a dip holder that is a tad on the ex side unless he/she is very experience.

Hi. Can I asked what is the charges for those piano teacher who come to our house to teach? My son is finishing his Yamaha Junior Course soon (4 years). I'm thinking of switching him to Individual Classical Piano where there is ABRSM exam and the progress should be faster. The fees seem to varies a lot - $140 to $180 for a grade 1 student. Is this normal?

My kids' piano teacher charges $260 per 4 lessons of 45mins each for Grade 6. Besides, she is entitled to 6 'days' of paid holiday per year. ie. no lesson but payable.

After browsing through the posts, I realised that the fees charged by your teacher is almost as high (if not higher!) than mine. I was still thinking if the fees are too high. :?
I am paying the same rate for both kids (G5 and G8) which is $300 for each child, 4 lessons of 1 hour (to come to my place).

Papers are necessary since it is a form of qualification. Experience comes with years of teaching. So, it all boils down to trial and error. Give the young teachers a chance as they need to start somewhere. Don’t pass judgement after a month (unless it really is that bad) but give the teacher some time to work with the child. For those who are changing teachers half way through, for example, after a few years of formal training, do give the teacher time in order to see the improvement set in. The teacher may be undoing some fundamental problems which will take time.
