Though Crescent Girls have made much inroad in recent years, SCGS still holds the upper hand in terms of prestige, name recognition and affilation status for the next generation. In addition, the recent move to increase its cop for affilated pupils argur well for their future results even though they are performing well now. The cop of Crescent Girls is around the low 240s, therefore the mean cop is higher than SCGS, so not a straighforward comparison. Crescent Girls needs to produce top scholars not just winning competitions to propel her to the league of SCGS/MGS/Cedar Girls.SCGS DSA via balletvery strong & powerful.
CGS got ballet ?
given a choice, i will choose SCGS over CGS Secondary, due to privilege for future granddaughter to enter SCGS Primary school - 30 yrs later down the road. Bypass all those sweating in ballot < 1km.
30 yrs later - anything can happen. Things keep on changing. 30 yrs from now, may not even have phase 2B nor phase 2C anymore... can enter only via Phase 1 and 2. Some schools already happening. example: Ai Tong don't need PV, no phase 2B.
CGS only has Secondary, there is no affliated CGS primary. lose out in this sense.
My take is still SCGS. -
also from privilege of entering SCGS primary - after PSLE, grand daughter can have a choice to stick back to SCGS Sec or go CGS Sec (if she want). She has the choice of 2 Sec schools to pick from.
another difference - there are a fair number of SCGS girls after Sec 4 (aged 16) fly directly to study in colleges overseas. They dun remain in SG to study A level. Their career path are planned by their parents. They go England, US colleges, stay in boarding schools there, prepare for pre-university. After that, pursue university. Many come back as full fledged medical doctors practioners. That’s why SCGS alumni has a fair pool of parents who are medical doctors. Within SCGS community, they all very well connected. Anytime any student falls sick, news travel fast. They call up one another instantly at the press of a button to offer remedies, medical counsel. Instant help and suport is available, 24 hours.
CGS lack this internal alumni strength supporting one another. -
Crescent is a school with excellent O level results . The students are generally better in Mathematics and Sciences, rather than the English language and the arts. If you send your child to Crescent, be assured that she have good O level results because of the commitment of the teachers to resort to all possible ways (including spoon feeding and lots of homework) to make her do well. The students have a strong foundation which enables them to compete effectively with the girls from the other IP schools, but there is a need to improve in critical thinking skills and oral communication.Resources are directed at producing a high average instead of developing "bright sparks". SCGS has relatively weaker O level results but the thinking skills imparted by the teachers put them in good stead. SCGS develops the students holistically by giving emphasis on CCA and enrichment activities for all.
Because Crescent attracts the better students from the neighbourhood primary schools, the standard of the spoken English in Crescent is relatively poor compared to SCGS and the students tend to speak Singlish. The girls in general are humble, diligent and quiet. SCGS girls have a good command of the English language because of the cultural capital from their families and role models provided by their teachers, many are alumni of SCGS. They are confident and articulate.
Crescent girls seem to have "fire in their belly" and they will strive to succeed in life.The SCGS girls have a relatively sheltered life and are always happy; but they will succeed in life anyway because of their good communication skills, social capital and adaptability. -
Scary:
Niece in Sec 1 this year. SIL highly educated chose to put her in CGS vs SCGS/MGS etc though it's further due to the following reasons:
- CGS is one of the top non-SAP/GEP girls' school
- SCGS & MGS have affiliated prim schools. Thus the classmates/schoolmates will have known each other and have cliques. Don't want niece to be out of place.
- Most kids in SCGS/MGS have above average background and may not be so humble.
- Traffic along Bukit Timah vs Redhill (with MRT).
Spot-on observations. My DD studies in CGS -Sec2... We did not qualify for SCGS/MGS 2 years ago, but looking back CGS suited our middle class background. All Class mates were new & she had opportunity to make life-long friendships. She is on the way to become confident person.

Dear Parent, please advise which is the best school.
Cresent all the way. School runs most successful Tablet PC program & prepares you for life. Having not qualified for IP is \"blessing in disguise\". School has less time( 4 years) to leave mark on the students & it is doing good job at it. O - level results are best for non-SAP school( St. Nic is SAP school)
SCGS has a history. Elite back ground. Affliation keeps students friends for life-long, 'Balleria' & Art related CCA . I don't think it is a good idea to join at SEC1 ... you have to get there from P1.
My advice CGS prepares you for life... Most important years of schooling are very well spent. -
I attended the CGS open house last year and I was very impressed with the conduct of the girls, the programme offered. The location of sch is also very convenient, for me, just a short walk. But I didn't choose CGS for dd because she qualified for sch with higher COP and also, I want her to study in a mixed sch.

SCGS and St Nick's IP programme with CHS is only starting in 2013. It is not for the intake of 2012.SCGS now IP with St Nick girls and Catholic High boys.

St. Nick. has better O level results. But comparision is taking bit too far. St Nick is a SAP school ... you have to be very strong in Languages with HMT mandatory.
