RI or HCI

RI and HCI both are good schools but have very different culture. It is very important that our DS fit into the environment and be happy. If your DS is a high flyer, he will excel no matter which school he chooses. The problem comes only when he can't make it, then which school is able to help him most become crucial. This is one of important points that parents have to consider when choosing between RI and HCI.
My exact feelings. What I want to \"feel\" or \"find out\" is the culture of the 2 schools - what type of kids will fit in there better; and how each school helps those kids struggling in there, in case the kid really needs help. In the case of open house etc., school is only interested in telling parents how they can develop / value add to the kids. What is more important to parents is the fit and the \"what if\" scenario being addressed.
This thread should not be a \"show-off\" or \"school bashing\" session, but rather to help address parents' concerns in these areas. -
The schools have to "show-off" because this is what most parents want to see/ hear. For me I care less how many president scholars have the schools produced as I know my average kid is not going to be one of them. What I always tell my DS is to make full use of his 6 years, which is the golden time of his life to study hard and play hard and enjoy it to the fullest.
Some kids excel when left alone under intense competition, some kids need to be closely monitored and given more encouragement to do well. Some are more happy in one environment than the other. So there is no right or wrong, better or worse choice between these two schools since they are no doubt the two of the best all boys’ schools in Singapore. -
I am sure most parents here have a kiasu streak in them…if not why do we try all means to get them into the best primary schools, sent them for enrichment classes, help them to DSA e.t.c
we really cannot really blame the school for showing off. Its part of the parent’s mentality to sent their child to the best school possible that is within the child’s abilities. The schools are just catering to the "demands" of the parent. -

Not all students are suitable for GEP just as in primary school. That was why they have a special screening process. Some mainstreamers who study hard and score well in PSLE also choose RI.
(2) The whole RI is run as a GEP school. i.e. regardless of which class the student is in, they all benefit from the GEP pedagogy that RI uses through out the whole cohort, as distinct from HCI which only the iSpark consortium is GEP-based while the other 3 consortia no doubt are still IP with enriched curriculum. -

Which is why some kids who mug to get their high PSLE scores find it a little tough going in the first year or so at top schools. They're not used to the pedagogy used. Too used to being spoonfed in primary school.

during the DSA process in HCI, we talked to some non-iSpark students. They openly 'complained' about difficult to catch up with the school work -

Even non-iSpark students complain it's difficult to catch up? Tough! That's why must select your secondary school carefully. -
In reality, those who cannot catch up are the minority at every end of sec 2. HCI has a ‘O’ level class for them and give them very good tr to drill for ‘O’ level. However, those who wake up at sec 3 and do well. they will put them back to IP track again.

What about RI? What happened to those who cannot catch-up - is there a "O" level class too?

No there isn't.
