Many public utilities have actually been privatised.

Like Singapore Power. Anyone complain about the high electrical bill? Actually, it is believed that some services are better off privatised. That is why Telecom was liberalised too…remember? not just public transport.

Yes people did complain about the electrical bill but is there anything that can be done? In the end, people find ways to use less...so to me that is a good outcome for being more environmentally friendly, that's about it. 😉

I dunno how many times I’ve said this. Improvements to the Mrt sytrm takes a long time… As for frequency of bus services the reason being bus drivers don’t adhere to their schedule for sone reason!!! Our service leaders have meager salaries and long working hours… That is one thing I will like to see improved. Had a chat with some drivers, thy complain about their working conditions… Especially one driving sv 961. Their timetable is so bloody tight they can barely keep up, leading to irregular frequencies. At least they could use the fare raise toINCREASE the drivers salary thus attracting local ppl whom u claim are better than foreigners. That is my current frustrations of the system now. The crowder trains are common in all parts of the world, s’pore’s system is old… Trains have to be able to run on these systems, and again the signal system is so complex it will take 9 years to revamp it. As for profits, u all sound like u want the system to be loss-making don’t u.

They thought the more money losing businesses there are, the better off they will be.

since when anyone said about wanting any company to be \"loss-making\" ? :?

There is an implicit yearning of subsidies for the services they receive. They believe these services can be run as non-profit organisations and still be as cost effective as ever. The first response is if it is possible, then show me. I would say that if we follow the same reasoning, then shouldn't we argue for the nationalisation of almost all businesses and services? Then all the needy people will get cheaper food, clothings, transport etc etc etc....

                  Hi Snowboy,

if my DS has a Sec1 project to do on public transport, I would want him to be in your team  . I am seriously impressed with your efforts to understand the SMRT system.

I too have an aunt who works as a bus driver, and it's true about the timetable. She is not complaining about the pay though, because she sees many of her working class peers struggling to get a job paying near what she is getting after 30 yrs as a driver.

But my personal point again, it is not about making profits or losses ( hopefully not ), but it is the timing to propose another rise in the fares, after another year of 9 digit nett profits. This is on top of the $313.6m spent on staff cost alone, and all other operating cost and expenses.

and I do not agree that the service leaders for the transport companies have meager salaries.....but then I am sure someone else will say it's relative again 🤷

$60-$80 for family of four per month? I am a stay at home mum now.

I used to pay more than $80 per month for my transport and that was more than 4 years ago......

                    $60-$80 towards profits, or $15-$20/month.[/quot

ok..but problem is I do not want part of profits to go into somebody's pocket..

If capacity is maximized, then ask for help. Get private companies to support during peak hours. You push up fare prices, and people see no improvement in the system, then there will be more dissatisfaction.

Garmen privatize public companies, yet there isn't the critical factor of competition that will derive the benefits of privatization such that it benefits the FINAL CONSUMER. If you say Singapore is too small a market for having more than one service provider, then I'd say drop the model. It isn't working.
