Here's My Take ....
Everyone has his/her own strength.
Even if it's not in the obvious One (Like Study Grade for a Child = Good Bucket), it could be in other In-Direct Ones (Like in Art, Music, Sports, Dance, Culinary, Computer, Chess, Gardening, Acting, Nursing, .... Even in Internet Gaming!)

Not too sure I want to encourage him on the Internet gaming stuff, sista!

I must digest all this info carefully and salvage my pride tonight. Thanks everyone for the inputs.

They R Competing to Get a Chance to Go US for a Stint in the Major Animation House in the Next 2 years ....

The problem is ds only asked me the qn, he didn't tell me the answer.

This is *ahem* a golden moment in our father-son relationship, say the right thing and my CEP - according to ds - will go up a notch, hehe. But I want to focus on only one point, so that my interpretation will be punchy. That's why now I'm cracking my head thinking of how to reply.

Actually - with dovey-eyes - ds tells me all sorts of stories regularly. Sometimes they are from Ts, sometimes from preachers. I make a point to listen attentively, knowing full well that one day he'll eventually grow up and all this sharing will stop.

Hi Sxm10109, I am sure your ds will experience a little cultural shock no matter which school he enrols in. However, kids adjust very quickly, especially if your ds is a gregarious one (I assume).

I would say the standard of PH is higher than many pri schools here, esp Higher Chinese. Nonetheless, there are true examples of kids who excelled over time in this subject. One sista's dd here can share but she'll be leaving us soon.

Kids have to learn to be resilient. Every school has their dedicated, passionate, mediocre and \"not-so-good\" teachers, this includes Pei Hwa. The one example you read about that teacher at the backgate was definitely not showing an exemplary behaviour. I agree with php that strict discipline is good and effective but there are many ways of exercising that to the children. Shouting, condescending and losing control are not ways to good discipline. Therefore, do not let one of such examples discourages you. When registering a child to a pri school here, there are many factors to consider. Besides hoping that there are good teachers, the discipline of the school, the curriculum, the culture, and belief are also considerations. You've read that many parents had gone thru, or will go thru extremes to enrol their kids to Pei Hwa, so that would say alot about the school.

My dd1 is P3. For the past years, she had experienced all kinds of teachers. However, none of the \"not-so-good\" ones, I would say, took away her joy in studying in PH. In fact, for those teachers who are passionate, she learns, not just academically, but about values and life skills from them too.

Just my 2-cents.

I was just asking ds the other night, why is he getting such low scores for his music worksheets (one had an egg!).. he told me that he has no idea what the teacher was talking abt in class. So I said that if u don't understand you should ask. His reply was 'But she is Chinese leh!! she won't understand what I am talking about!' He doesn't quite believe me when I tell him we are chinese too He used to be able to converse in Chinese with his K2 teacher and at home.. but somehow he can't do so properly now.

Really wonder if he listens and understand his lessons in school.. :roll:

The reason for this is that our environment is not conducive to learning that language. My ds also experienced the same issue. Two trips - one to china, another to taiwan - fixed that problem. When ds realised that in this world, there're still societies using that language exclusively, he dropped the notion that chinese is useless.

Btw, music is ds's favourite lesson cos he gets to 'perform' during class. Incidentally, according to him, there're 2 music prodigies in the class. One boy completed grade 8, another girl diploma. Not sure whether he heard wrongly but if it's true, that's truly amazing. :salute:

Thanks E3 for the encouraging words, and yes I fully agree with you! I shall persist in the balloting for ph and hope to get in, regardless the result, it has been a joy reading this forum and its inspiring stories… Now dunno can get in or not! Leaving it all to God and praying hard!

true… tigeress teacher in phpps my daughter was lightly slap by d chinese teacher for her homework not properly done im still thinking wana go school to make a fuss about it. on second thought i just let d matter rest coz might make her day more miserable im telling my daughter just bear for 3 half more mth u wont be seeing her after your next primary term.

Last year, this boy also told my dd he was grade 8. I didn't think otherwise. However, he took his grade 5 theory exam on the same day as my dd this year. If he claims he was grade 8 last year, I wonder how he attained it without at least a pass in the grade 5 theory? So there, if your ds's classmates completed grade 8 and above, they must be superkids to understand grade 5 theory at such a young age! One way to prove it, get them to play for your ds. Hehe...
